Rally Falls Short at Norwich in Women's Lacrosse Season Opener

Hazel Stoddard led all scorers with four goals in MMA's 12-8 loss

NORTHFIELD, Vt.--Senior Hazel Stoddard posted a game-high four goals among five points, but Maine Maritime Academy was unable to complete a spirited second-half comeback in a 12-8 non-conference loss at Norwich University in season opening women's lacrosse action for both squads at Sabine Field on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Lillian Diversi notched three points on two goals and an assist, while sophomore Julia Wade (4 draw controls, 2 caused turnovers) and freshman
Caitlyn Lamb (3 caused turnovers) also found the back of the cage in their MMA debuts. Stoddard also had four draw controls.

Ellie Moriarty (3g, 4a) and Vivian Buntin (3g, 3a) led the Norwich offense, which outshot MMA 23-18. The Cadets also had advantages in turnovers (24-31), caused turnovers (27-18), clears (20-25, 11-19) and ground balls (23-13).

The host Cadets jumped out to leads of 5-1 after the first quarter and 9-2 at halftime, but the Mariners didn't back down while outscoring NU 6-3 in the second half.

Maine Maritime junior goalie Ella Bowes made eight saves and had a team highs of four caused turnovers and six ground balls to top all student-athletes in the latter. Senior Kirra Magana, who opted not to play lacrosse last season, didn't miss a beat in her return to the sport for the first time since 2023 by recording eight draw controls--the same amount that Norwich had as a TEAM.

Bailey Manning-Ingala had four stops to get the win.

Maine Maritime will host Mount Saint Mary College (NY) at noon Saturday for its home opener at Ritchie Field.
