Mariners Double Up Knights in Home Opener, 17-8

Hazel Stoddard reaches milestone and Julia Wade nets career-high four goals

CASTINE--Senior Hazel Stoddard reached the 300-point plateau for her career, sophomore Lillian Diversi led all scorers with six points, and classmate Julia Wade notched a career-best four goals, to power Maine Maritime Academy to a 17-8 home-opening victory Saturday over Mount Saint Mary College (NY) in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Ritchie Field. The visiting Knights lost for the first time in three outings, while the Mariners improve to 1-1 on the season.

Stoddard finished with three goals and two assists to extend her all-time school record to 300 points, as she is the fourth-leading active career scorer in NCAA Division III and tops in the North Atlantic Conference. Junior Rebecca Caron and Diversi (3 assists) also recorded hat tricks for Maine Maritime, which outshot the Knights 28-22.

Shannon McGowan led MSMC with three goals among four points, followed by Karlie Ferrucci and Delisianna Naccarato with two goals and one assist each.

Maine Maritime jumped out to a 5-0 first quarter lead by five different goal scorers before Victoria Maffettone scored on the man-up to get the Knights on the scoreboard with the first goal of the second.

The Mariners put the game away with a 7-2 run to take a commanding 12-3 halftime lead. Senior Kirra Magana's (2g, 1a) second goal of the day with 14 minutes and 18 seconds left in the fourth quarter gave MMA its biggest cushion at 17-5.

Besides the scoreboard, MMA also had statistical advantages in shots on goals (26-11), ground balls (19-12) and turnovers (17-20). Stoddard and Naccarato tied for game-high honors with five draw controls, while the former led all student-athletes with five ground balls.

Maine Maritime hits the road on Tuesday (4 p.m.) at Gordon College for a non-conference tilt in Wenham, Mass.
