Trey Marcil Ties Career High with Four Goals in Loss to Wheaton (Mass.)

The visiting Lyons won 16-7

CASTINE--Junior Trey Marcil tied his career high with four goals to pace Maine Maritime Academy, but the Mariners couldn't overcome a fast start by Wheaton College (Mass.) as the Lyons won 16-7 in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Ritchie Field on Saturday afternoon. Wheaton improves to 3-1 overall while Maine Maritime drops to 0-2 on the season.

Senior Sam Nichol also had a multi-point game with one goal and one assist for MMA. Sophomore Bryce Crowell, who is the reigning North Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, was outstanding again in the face-off "X" by winning 19 of 27 draws, scooping up a game-best 12 ground balls and producing game-high three caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Andrew Noyes turned aside 17 shots for a career high.

Wheaton's Charlie Goodrich tied Marcil for top goal-scoring honors while leading all student-athletes with seven points. Emmett Edwards also registered a hat trick and Theo Stamatel added five points (2g, 3a). Connor Almstrom made 19 saves for the win.

The Lyons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 2 minutes and 32 seconds before senior Brendan Reddington and Marcil scored six seconds apart to bring to knot things at 2-2 for MAA at the 9:10 mark.

Wheaton, however, began a 7-0 run over two quarters that saw the visitors lead 5-2 after one and 11-3 at halftime. The MMA defense allowed just five goals in the second half, but couldn't get its offense in sync.

Maine Maritime had the advantage on ground balls (41-31) and on face-offs, but Wheaton went 3-for-5 on extra-man advantages (MMA was 1-for-2).

The Mariners are on the road on Wednesday (4 p.m.) at Saint Joseph's College of Maine in Standish.
