Mariners Zap Lasers Behind Andrew Noyes' Career-High 21 Saves

Ryan Dunstan and Tobey Lappin provide the offense recording a hat trick apiece

CASTINE—Sophomore goalie Andrew Noyes posted a career-high 21 saves, and freshmen Tobey Lappin and Ryan Dunstan both recorded hat tricks, to lead Maine Maritime Academy to cruise to a 12-3 win over visiting Lasell University in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Ritchie Field on Saturday.

Maine Maritime has put together back-to-back wins to even its overall record to 2-2, while Lasell dips to 1-2 on the season.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Junior Trey Marcil led all scorers with four points, including three assists, and Dunstan added an assist to also finish with a game-high four points.
  • Senior Brendan Reddington provided three points with a goal and two helpers.
  • Sophomore Bryce Crowell led MMA with eight ground balls and he won nine of 18 face-off attempts.
  • Senior Sam Nichol and sophomore Ryker Spear contributed two goals apiece.
  • Marcil also chipped in four ground balls along with Noyes and sophomore John Martin.
Lasell Highlights
  • Jack Condon and Ryan Stone led the Lasers with two points each on a goal and an assist.
  • Francis Pino had game highs of 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers.
How it Happened
  • Just like the 22-mile-per-hour westerly winds at game time, MMA breezed by the visitors early and often by jumping out to a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Dunstan and Lappin provided the spark with man-up goals 1 minute and 51 seconds apart with 6 minutes and 18 seconds left.
  • In the second quarter, Lappin and Spear increased the Mariners' advantage to 6-0 by halftime.
  • Trailing 7-0, Jason Martin got Lasell on the scoreboard at the 11:25 mark of the third quarter and Condon scored at 3:32 to make it 7-2.
  • The Mariners left no doubt in the fourth when they outscored the Lasers 5-1.
  • Marcil wrapped up MMA's scoring with a man-down goal with 4:43 left in the game on a nice feed from sophomore defender Finnian O'Donnell.
  • Lasell had advantages in shots (44-34), shots on goal (24-20), clears (18-22/24-34) and ground balls (42-36), but MMA killed off all eight man-up opportunities for the Lasers who were stymied by Noyes all afternoon.
Inside the Boxscore
  • Lasell is a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, as MMA is 2-0 against that conference this season.
  • Lappin continues his hot scoring streak with hat tricks in consecutive games.
  • Maine Maritime picks up its first-ever win over the Lasers in four tries, and the programs were meeting for the first time since 2004.
  • The 12 goals are the most the Mariners have scored against Lasell, which was making its first trip to Castine since the 2003 campaign.
  • Nichol leads MMA with 12 points while Lappin (11 points) has tied him for the team lead with nine goals.
Next Up
  • Maine Maritime travels to Gorham on Tuesday (5 p.m.) for a non-conference contest at the University of Southern Maine.
