Shorthanded Mariners Prove Mettle in Close Defeat at Colby

Finnian O'Donnell had a game-high 3 caused turnovers; Ryan Dunstan led all scorers with 4 goals

WATERVILLE, Maine—Playing its first game in more than a week, the Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse team gave host Colby College all it could handle in a 16-13 non-conference loss to the Mules on Tuesday evening at Seaverns Field. The Mariners fall to 4-5 on the season, while Colby ups its overall mark to 3-5.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Freshman Ryan Dunstan led all point-scorers with four goals for a career high.
  • Classmates Tobey Lappin, Tristan Reinhold and senior Sam Nichol added two goals apiece.
  • Senior Brendan Reddington had a game-high-tying four points on a goal and three assists.
  • Sophomore Finnian O'Donnell led all student-athletes with three caused turnovers and he had four ground balls.
  • Junior Trey Marcil, who added a goal and an assist, scooped up a game-high seven ground balls for a career best.
  • Sophomore Andrew Noyes made 16 saves to keep MMA within striking distance.
  • Classmate Addison Thawley also enjoyed a multi-point night with a goal and an assist.
Colby Highlights
  • Luke Lombardo and Matt Stein led the Mules with three goals apiece.
  • Matthew Torrey got the win by making 11 stops.
  • Kyle Skop won 10 of 12 face-offs and had seven ground balls.
  • Evan DeVita (3 points), Matthew George (3 points), Max Proia (3 points) and Harrison Leenhouts chipped in two goals each.
How it Happened
  • Despite missing a few players, Maine Maritime proved its mettle by holding Colby to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.
  • Proia got the scoring started for the Mules who took a 1-0 lead 43 seconds after the opening face-off. Lombardo and George scored goals 45 seconds apart for the three-goal advantage with 6 minutes and 6 seconds remaining.
  • In the second quarter, Colby outscored MMA 5-2 to go up 8-2 by halftime.
  • But the visiting Mariners kept fighting in the second half, as both teams scored six goals (MAA had six different goal scorers) in the third quarter. Colby led 14-8.
  • Trailing 12-3, MMA scored four goals in a row during a 4:04 span to cut the deficit in half by the 4:32 mark of the third quarter.
  • Maine Maritime continued the comeback bid in the fourth, outscoring Colby 5-2.
  • Dunstan scored a pair late that brought the Mariners within 14-12 with 8:26 to go and 15-13 at the 1:28 mark.
  • Zac Landon tallied an insurance goal--his first of the season--with 46 seconds left to round out the scoring.
  • Colby, which never trailed, got what proved to be the game-winning goal off the stick of Tidiane Gakou, his first goal of the season, which made the score 14-7 at 2:13 of the third.
Inside the Boxscore
  • Maine Maritime last saw game action on March 22 when the Mariners defeated SUNY-Delhi, 24-6, in the North Atlantic Conference opener.
  • Colby College plays in the New England Small College Athletic Conference which has four teams in the top 10 and five overall in the NCAA Division III men's lacrosse national rankings.
  • The Mules, who lead the all-time series 11-0 over the Mariners, won their first home game in four tries this spring.
  • The score of last year's contest was 30-5 in favor of Colby, showing that MMA has closed the gap.
  • Maine Maritime committed just 14 turnovers--its fewest in a road game this season.
