Mariners Blaze Trail Past MCLA on Senior Day

Three MMA scorers reach double-digit points including Brendan Reddington with game highs of 13 on school-record 11 assists

CASTINE--On a damp and chilly Senior Day for the Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse team, the Mariners wouldn't let the weather nor opponent Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts keep the home team from being red-hot with a dominating 29-3 victory over the Trailblazers in North Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Mariners up their record to 6-5 overall and 3-0 in the NAC, while MCLA falls to 1-8 on the season and 0-3 in the conference.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Senior Brendan Reddington led three MMA players in double-digits with a career- and game-high 13 points, including a school-record 11 assists. He also scooped up eight ground balls.
  • Freshman Tobey Lappin pumped in a game-best eight goals (10 points) and he had four ground balls.
  • Junior Trey Marcil tallied four goals, seven assists and 11 points for career highs in the latter two categories. He also made four ground balls.
  • Sophomore Bryce Crowell went 25-for-26 in the face-off "X" and shoveled a game-best 18 ground balls.
  • Junior Cole Michaud added eight ground balls and 9-for-9 on face-offs.
  • Senior Sam Nichol, sophomore Addison Thawley (5 points) and freshman Ryan Dunstan also recorded a hat trick each.
  • Sophomore Matthew Villeneuve led the defense with eight ground balls.
MCLA Highlights
  • Neal Brierley scored all three of his team's goals.
  • Josh Hemstock and Josh Hemstock also got on the scoresheet with an assist apiece.
  • Hayden Schuler made 33 saves for the second-most in all NCAA Divisions this season (prior to today's action).
How it Happened
  • After MCLA tied the score 1-1 with 10 minutes and 1 second remaining in the first quarter, MMA tallied the next eight goals to take a 9-1 advantage on a goal from Nichol with 14:01 showing on the second quarter clock.
  • Maine Maritime led 17-2 at halftime.
  • The Mariners helped induce 39 MCLA turnovers and went 23-for-25 clearing.

  • Prior to the start of the game, the five-member Maine Maritime Senior Class--Will Arnone (5 ground balls), Zeb Dufresne (5 GBs), Ben Elliott (4 GBs), Nichol and Reddington--was recognized for their careers and contributions to the program.
  • The Mariners have outscored the opposition 57-9 in the last two games.
  • Reddington broke the MMA single-game assists record previously held by Jayden Wilson, who had nine at Becker on March 4, 2020.

  • The 29 goals and 26 victory margin are season bests.
