BIDDEFORD, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy volleyball team closed out the Maine Coast Classic hosted by the University of New England on Saturday by sweeping both Saint Joseph's College of Maine and the University of Southern Maine, 3-0, to remain unbeaten on the season.
In the opener, Maine Maritime (3-0) and Saint Joseph's (1-1) played a tight first set before the Mariners pulled ahead 17-12. The Monks rallied to within 22-20, but MMA held on for a 25-21 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Mariners dominated the next two sets, cruising to a 25-14 win in the second and a 25-16 victory in the third for the sweep.
MMA hit .355 as a team in the match. Senior
Sophia Biggie recorded a match-high 11 kills, while juniors
Ally Hadley and
Sydney Williams added 10 and nine, respectively. Senior
Hunnie Zuber-Stephens dished out 34 assists and matched Williams with a team-high seven service aces. Sophomore
Hannah Tate tallied a match-high 11 digs.
Maine Maritime carried its momentum into the second match, defeating Southern Maine (0-3) 3-0 while hitting .492 as a team.
The Mariners opened with a 25-14 first-set win behind a .555 hitting percentage before closing out the afternoon with 25-13 and 25-16 victories.
Williams led the way with a match-high 11 kills. Biggie added 10 kills for her second straight double-digit performance, and senior
Ila Smith chipped in eight. Zuber-Stephens totaled 29 assists, six aces and six digs. Williams finished with seven assists and tied Smith for a match-high three blocks. Tate contributed nine digs and four service aces.
Maine Maritime returns to action Sept. 6 at the Colby Invitational, facing Wisconsin-Stout at 11 a.m. and Colby College at 1:30 p.m.
