CASTINE, Maine — Maine Maritime Academy used a balanced scoring effort and timely plays down the stretch to earn a 71-69 North Atlantic Conference victory over Thomas College Saturday night at Smith Gymnasium.
The Mariners (8-13, 8-6 NAC) rallied in the second half after trailing early, using consecutive baskets and stout defense to pull ahead in the closing minutes. Sophomore
Marcus Schade led the way with 20 points, pacing Maine Maritime's offense. Junior
Jack Banks chipped in 17 points and hit key free throws in the final minute to help seal the narrow win over Thomas (7-13, 6-7 NAC). Freshman
Drew Hamilton added 11 points and provided steady playmaking throughout.
Maine Maritime shot 43.5% from the field and knocked down 8 of 29 three-point attempts, while converting 9 of 18 free throws in a tight contest that saw multiple lead changes. The Mariners' defense forced turnovers at critical moments and limited Thomas' late offensive opportunities.
The Mariners host Lesley University at home on Saturday for senior day.
