CASTINE, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy men's swimming and diving team turned in a strong all-around performance Friday afternoon, posting multiple event wins and top times in to beat Plymouth State University 189-67 in Bok Pool.
The Mariners opened the meet in impressive fashion, sweeping the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay. MMA's relay of freshmen
Connor Hedstrom and
Jack Davis, sophomore
Cameron Hedstrom and senior James Creegan touched first in 1:45.97, followed closely by the Mariners second relay team of freshmen
Dominic Miele, Tim Reda,
Ryan Johnson Rees and
Henry Keepes at 1:48.88, setting the tone early.
Distance swimming was a highlight for the Mariners. Freshman
B Boyer captured the 1,000-yard freestyle with a winning time of 10:55.30, narrowly edging Creegan (10:56.38). Boyer later doubled up with another victory in the 500 freestyle, touching first in 5:13.73, while freshman Matthew Levesque added a runner-up finish in 5:20.86.
Sprint events also favored MMA.
Connor Hedstrom won the 200 freestyle in 1:52.71 and followed with a victory in the 50 breaststroke at 29.19. Levesque claimed the 50 freestyle title in 24.19, while Johnson Rees led a 1-2-3 Maine Maritime sweep in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.82.
In butterfly events, Boyer placed second in the 100 fly (1:01.71), and Johnson Rees added a runner-up finish in the 50 fly (26.85), continuing MMA's depth across strokes.
Diving was another strong point for the Mariners. Senior
Oliver Cox dominated the one-meter diving competition with a meet-best score of 251.50, while sophomore
Michael Ordonez finished second with 155.95, securing valuable points for MMA.
The meet concluded with a win in the 200 freestyle relay, as the team of Cox,
Cameron Hedstrom, Davis and Creegan closed the afternoon with a first-place time of 1:37.78, putting a cap on a successful home performance.
The Mariners return to action on the road Saturday, Jan. 17, with an 11 a.m. meet at Saint Joseph's College of Maine.
