CASTINE, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer team battled back from an early deficit and earned a 1-1 draw against the University of Maine at Fort Kent in a non-conference men's soccer match Sunday afternoon at Ritchie Field.
Maine-Fort Kent struck first in the 12th minute to take an early 1-0 advantage.
The Mariners responded at 24:28 of the first half, leveling the match on an own goal forced by Maine Maritime pressure. The equalizer proved to be the final goal of the contest despite a heavy second-half push from the Bengals.
Senior goalkeeper
Reagan Moynihan was key in preserving the draw, making six saves, including four in the second half. UMFK outshot the Mariners 21-6 and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks, but Moynihan and the Maine Maritime back line turned away several dangerous opportunities down the stretch.
Senior
James Baur led the Mariners offensively with three shots, including the team's lone shot on goal. Freshman
Garrett Loyd added two shots as Maine Maritime held firm defensively over the final 65 minutes.
Fort Kent nearly broke the deadlock several times in the second half, hitting the woodwork twice and forcing multiple saves from Moynihan, but the Mariners weathered the pressure to secure the draw.
Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday at home against Thomas College for senior day beginning at noon.
