FARMINGTON, Maine — Maine Maritime Academy rolled to a 68-50 upset North Atlantic Conference victory over the University of Maine at Farmington, paced by a balanced scoring attack and stout defense to secure the top seed in the NAC tournament.
Senior
Jacquelin Castro led the Mariners with 13 points and controlled the paint with seven rebounds, while Senior
Grace Huntwork added 11 points and Senior
Sydney Loring chipped in 10 in the win.
Maine Maritime (17-8, 16-2 NAC) built an early cushion and never relinquished the lead, closing the first half up by double digits and maintaining control through every quarter. The Mariners shot 39.3% from the field and connected on 11 of 30 3-point attempts.
Sophomore
Addison Forry posted a formidable all-around performance with 16 rebounds and eight points, anchoring Maine Maritime's strong presence on the boards. Junior
Hailey Blanchard and freshman
Savannah Ferguson contributed timely offense, finishing with seven and eight points, respectively.
Defensively, Maine Maritime limited Farmington to 26.8% shooting, including holding the Beavers in check from long range. The Mariners also outpaced their hosts in second-chance points and forced multiple turnovers that turned into transition opportunities.
The Mariners will now turn the attention to the NAC tournament hosting the winner of No. 4 Thomas College and No. 5 SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday.
