Men’s lacrosse cruises to midweek victory over Saint Joseph’s

CASTINE, Maine — Maine Maritime erupted for nine first-half goals and never looked back, rolling to an 18–6 victory over Saint Joseph's College of Maine in a nonconference men's lacrosse matchup Wednesday evening at Ritchie Field.

Maine Maritime improved to 4-3 on the season with a dominant performance on both ends, controlling possession, winning faceoffs and overwhelming Saint Joseph's (4-4) with balanced scoring.

Sophomore Tobey Lappin led the offensive surge with a game-high four goals and four assists, while senior Trey Marcil added three goals and four assists. Freshman Ryan Parent contributed three goals and three assists, and junior Ryker Spear chipped in two goals and an assist as the Mariners placed nine different players in the scoring column.

Maine Maritime set the tone early, opening the game with five unanswered goals in the first quarter. Marcil netted the game's first goal less than a minute in, and sophomore Tristan Reinhold followed with a pair of first-quarter strikes to push the lead to 5–0 after one.

The Mariners continued to pour it on in the second quarter, scoring four more times to build a commanding 9–2 halftime advantage. Lappin and Marcil each recorded multiple points during the stretch, while the defense held Saint Joseph's scoreless for more than 27 minutes to start the game.

After a brief push by Saint Joseph's in the third quarter trimmed the margin to 10–5, Maine Maritime responded emphatically in the fourth. The Mariners erupted for eight goals in the final period, including a pair from Parent and two more from Lappin, to turn the game into a rout.

Maine Maritime dominated possession throughout, winning 20 of 27 faceoffs, with junior Bryce Crowell finishing 20-25 with 10 ground balls with the team holding a 56–30 advantage in ground balls. The Mariners also outshot Saint Joseph's 46–31 and converted 3 of 5 extra-man opportunities.

Defensively, goalkeeper sophomore Ben Kieu made 15 saves to earn the win, anchoring a unit that limited Saint Joseph's to just six goals despite multiple man-up chances.

With contributions up and down the lineup and a decisive fourth-quarter surge, Maine Maritime turned in one of its most complete performances of the season in the convincing home victory.

The Mariners return to action on Saturday when they host SUNY Cobleskill for their North Atlantic Conference opener beginning at noon.
