DELHI, N.Y. — The Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse team used a dominant fourth quarter to pick up a 13-10 comeback victory over SUNY Delhi on Sunday in its North Atlantic Conference opener on the road.
Maine Maritime (5-3, 1-0 NAC) trailed SUNY Delhi (2-5, 0-1 NAC) 5-2 after the opening quarter, the Broncos opened the game on a 4-0 scoring run before sophomore
Tristan Reinhold got the Mainers on the board with 1:16 remaining and senior
Cole Michaud added a goal with :22 seconds remaining to pull within 4-2.
Delhi managed to add a late first-quarter score, but MMA opened the second quarter on a 3-0 scoring run to tie the game 5-5, backed by two goals from Michaud and a man-up goal from freshman
Ryan Parent. The Broncos added a late goal to end the half and led 6-5 heading into the break.
Coming out of the break, Delhi scored to extend its advantage to two goals, Parent pulled the Mariners back within one giving the Broncos a 7-6 edge heading into the deciding quarter.
Delhi came out to open the fourth with 3-1 scoring run, scoring to open the quarter, but sophomore
Tobey Lappin matched the goal with his first of the game.
However, with following Delhi's last goal with 10:17 remaining, MMA took over. Senior
Trey Marcil scored to pull within 10-8 with 7:29 remaining and Parent cut the deficit to one goal with 5:42 on the clock.
Lappin tied the game with 4:58 remaining and Parent gave the Mariners their first lead with 4:15 at 11-10. Freshman
Calvin Johnson added an insurance goal with 2:44 remaining and Lappin sealed the road win scoring with :01 seconds on the clock.
Parent finished the afternoon with four goals and five assists, while Michaud and Lappin both notched hat tricks. Additionally, sophomore
Ryan Dunstan, junior
Bryce Crowell, junior
Ryker Spear, Michaud, freshman Walker Randall and senior
Trey Marcil all added assists, with Marcil tallying two.
Crowell dominated on the faceoff finishing 18-27 with nine ground balls, while junior
John Martin racked up four caused turnovers and senior
Elijah Brito added two.
Sophomore
Ben Kieu stood tall in cage, recording 10 saves on 20 shots and allowing only 10 goals.
The Mariners finished with a 46-37 edge on ground balls and caused 15 turnovers.
MMA returns to action on Wednesday when they faceoff against Colby College at home beginning at 7 p.m.
