NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Maine Maritime delivered a dominant performance Saturday, erupting for 10 second-quarter goals en route to a 19-5 victory over MCLA in North Atlantic Conference action.
Maine Maritime (7-4, 3-0) overwhelmed MCLA on both ends of the field, outshooting the hosts 74-29 and controlling possession throughout, highlighted by a decisive 23-of-27 effort at the faceoff X.
Trey Marcil and
Ryan Parent led the offensive onslaught with five goals apiece. Marcil added four assists for a game-high nine points, while Parent finished with eight points on five goals and three assists.
Tobey Lappin also had a standout performance, tallying four goals and five assists, and
Randall Walker contributed two goals and two assists.
After building a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, Maine Maritime broke the game open in the second. The Mariners scored 10 goals in the period, including a stretch of eight goals in just over 12 minutes, to take a commanding 13-1 halftime advantage.
The Mariners continued to control play in the second half, extending the lead to 17-1 by the end of the third quarter.
Connor Harvey and
Tristan Reinhold each added a goal during that stretch, while Parent and Marcil continued to drive the offense.
Defensively, Maine Maritime held MCLA scoreless for over two full quarters and forced 28 turnovers while collecting 45 ground balls.
Bryce Crowell played a key role in possession dominance, winning 21 of 22 faceoffs.
Ben Kieu earned the win in goal, making six saves over 30 minutes, while
Johannes Zachhuber and
Will Farrell combined for the remaining 30 minutes and six saves.
MCLA (4-4, 0-2) scored four goals in the fourth quarter to narrow the final margin, with Carson Lewis leading the way with a goal and two assists.
Maine Maritime finished 3-for-4 on extra-man opportunities and showcased balanced scoring, with seven different players finding the net in the victory.
The Mariners take to the road on Saturday for a nonconference matchup against Lesley University at 2 p.m. before battling Anna Maria College on Sunday at noon.
