EAST BOSTON, Mass. — Maine Maritime used a dominant second-half surge to rally past Suffolk, 9-6, on Saturday at East Boston Memorial, extending its winning streak and improving to 6-3 overall.
Trailing 4-3 at halftime and 5-3 early in the third quarter, Maine Maritime erupted for six of the game's final seven goals to seize control and remain unbeaten in conference play.
Bella Scolaro led the Mariners with a hat trick, scoring three goals on five shots, including two key second-quarter tallies that helped keep Maine Maritime within striking distance.
Hadley Stoddard and
Caitlyn Lamb each added two goals, with Lamb netting the eventual game-winner early in the fourth quarter to give the Mariners a 7-5 advantage they would not relinquish.
Suffolk jumped out to a fast start, scoring twice in the opening quarter and adding two more in the second to take a 4-1 lead. After Scolaro opened the scoring for Maine Maritime midway through the second quarter,
Julia Wade and Scolaro added late goals to cut the deficit to one at the break.
The Mariners took control in the third period, as Stoddard scored twice and Lamb added another to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 6-5 lead heading into the final quarter.
Maine Maritime continued its momentum in the fourth, with Lamb scoring just 10 seconds into the period before
Lauren Robinson added a man-up goal and Scolaro capped the run with her third goal of the game in the final minute.
Ella Bowes anchored the Mariners defensively, finishing with 11 saves while facing 22 shots. Maine Maritime's defense tightened after halftime, allowing just two goals over the final 30 minutes.
Robinson also contributed across the field with four ground balls and three caused turnovers, helping fuel the Mariners' transition game.
Maine Maritime outscored Suffolk 9-2 over the final three quarters and capitalized on key free-position opportunities, converting three times.
The Mariners return to action at home on Saturday when they host Husson University for senior day beginning at 1 p.m.
