CASTINE, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy continued its strong start to North Atlantic Conference play Saturday afternoon, defeating Vermont State University Johnson 2-0 at Ritchie Field behind a pair of second-half penalty kick goals.
The Mariners dominated possession and attacking opportunities throughout the match, outshooting the Badgers 38-3 and holding a 15-0 advantage in shots on goal.
After a scoreless first half in which VTSU Johnson goalkeeper Zane Cooper made nine saves to keep the visitors even, Maine Maritime finally broke through in the 52nd minute. Senior
Mason Quiet converted a penalty kick at 51:44 to give the Mariners a 1-0 advantage and notch what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Less than two minutes later, senior
Hunter Crea added insurance with another successful penalty kick at 53:33, extending the lead to 2-0.
The Mariners continued to pressure the Badgers throughout the second half but were unable to add to the margin despite generating 15 corner kicks and numerous quality chances. Senior
James Baur led the attack with seven shots, including five on target, while sophomore
Connor Butler added six shots and Quiet recorded four attempts.
Defensively, Maine Maritime was equally dominant, limiting VTSU Johnson to just three shots and none on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Reagan Moynihan earned the shutout as the Mariners recorded their second-consecutive clean sheet.
Additionally, the Mariners recognized the career of men's soccer legend B.C. Voyou during pregame honoring Voyou's No. 14 jersey during a pregame ceremony.
The Mariners return to action on Wednesday on the road against Bates College beginning at 7 p.m.
