CASTINE, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy volleyball team fell to Bates College, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Smith Gymnasium in its 2026 home opener.
The Mariners took the third set, 25-16, after Bates won the opening two sets, 25-20 and 25-13, before closing the match with a 25-13 fourth-set victory.
Senior
Sydney Williams led Maine Maritime with 16 kills, while senior
Ally Hadley added eight kills and 10 digs. Williams also recorded two service aces and eight digs.
Junior
Hannah Tate paced the Mariners defensively with 28 digs and added two kills, four assists and four service aces. Freshman
Faith Reed finished with 26 assists, 10 digs and a block assist.
Freshman
Lyla Annen contributed six kills and seven digs, while freshman
Kelsie Murray added two kills and a solo block. Freshman
Jaslene Butler recorded a block assist, and the Mariners finished with 34 kills, 31 assists, nine aces, 64 digs and two total blocks.
Maine Maritime battled throughout the opening set, overcoming an early 9-4 deficit to tie the score at 10-10. The Mariners later pulled even at 18-18 before Bates closed the set, 25-20.
The Mariners fell behind 4-0 to open the second set and later faced a 16-7 deficit. Maine Maritime fought back to within 16-10, but Bates finished the set, 25-13.
Maine Maritime opened the third set with an 8-3 lead behind three consecutive Tate service aces and extended its advantage to 14-8. After Bates closed the gap to 16-15, the Mariners scored the final nine points of the set to earn a 25-16 victory.
The Mariners took an early 3-1 lead in the fourth set before Bates answered with a 17-1 run. Maine Maritime continued to battle, scoring five consecutive points late in the set, including three straight Williams kills, but Bates closed out the match, 25-13.
Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday when it opens North Atlantic Conference play on the road against Husson University at 2 and 4 p.m.
