CASTLETON, Vt. - Castleton used a four-goal run, spanning 10 minutes in the first half, to ignite a 5-0 win over Maine Maritime in a North Atlantic Conference men's soccer game Saturday. The Spartans improved to 2-1 NAC, 5-2-1 overall, while the Mariners suffered their first loss in NAC play and fell to 3-4-2, 1-1-1.

Five different players scored for the Spartans, who posted their fourth shutout of the season. Owen Fellows netted a goal and dished off two assists, while Nate Koenemann made nine saves. 

The team played smothering defenses in the first 30 minutes of the game before the Spartans broke the deadlock. Off a corner kick, Fellows collected the ball and dropped it to the top of the 18-yard box where Drazen Smith deposited the ball.

Fellows netted a goal 1:43 later when Spencer Dandurand crossed a ball from the left flank. Fellows earned a half-step on a defender in the center of the box, and with very little clearance, lunged to head the ball, directing it to the side netting to extend the Spartan lead to 2-0.

In the 42nd minute, Castleton added a third goal when Yosef Osheyack found the net on his first touch of the game. John Kendall  added another score for Castleton to give the Spartans a 4-0 halftime lead.

The Mariners opened the second half with three shots in three minutes. Kyle Haslam fired wide in the 50th minute, Nicholas George's kick in the 51st was blocked and Jonathan Reeks' shot at 53:14 was saved by Koenemann.

Dameon Young scored the Spartans final goal in the 55th minute off a feed from Fellows.

Maine Maritime outshot Castleton 9-1 in the remainder of the second half but couldn't find the net.

Jesse Perkins stopped two shots in goal for the Mariners in the first half and Benjamin Cummings had zero saves in the second half.

Maine Maritime returns to action Sunday, noon, at Green Mountain.
