Box Score POULTNEY, Vt. – Maine Maritime used the strength of three first half goals to spark a 4-0 win over Green Mountain in a North Atlantic Conference men's soccer match Sunday. The Mariners improved to 4-4-2 overall, 2-1-1 NAC, while the Eagles fell to 2-8-0, 1-2-0.
Maine Maritime got on the scoreboard early when Nicholas George tapped in a crossing pass from Jonathan Reeks. Reeks picked up a chipped ball from a teammate and worked his way down the left side, cutting towards the net. Just outside the left six-yard box he crossed a pass to George who easily converted a strike, beating GMC keeper Nate Laymon.
The Mariners added to their lead with 26:08 left to play in the half when Chad McDonnell roofed a shot into the top of the net from the goalmouth after the Eagles' keeper punched away a header on the previous scoring chance.
Maine Maritime extended its lead in the 32nd minute when Bryan Soucy gathered a loose ball and struck a line drive from yards out. The score gave the Mariners a 3-0 halftime lead.
MMA held the shot advantage, outshooting the Eagles 9-6 in the half.
The Mariners added another goal in the second half on a hustle play as Reeks challenged a clear by the GMC keeper who fired an attempted clear off the forward and into the Eagles' net.
Jesse Perkins and Benjamin Cummings earned the shared shutout with Perkins claiming the victory for Maine Maritime. Perkins made five saves in the win, while Laymon made four saves for the Eagles.
Maine Maritime returns to action Saturday, 1 p.m., hosting Johnson State in a NAC contest.
