Box Score THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse fell to SUNY Maritime 16-6, on Friday night in day one of the Inaugural Maritime Cup.
Taylor O'Malley (Middletown, R.I.) put the Mariners on the board first, on an assist from Leah Libby (Paris, Maine) at 26:11, the Privateers answered back with a goal from Shannon Brady and a free-position goal from Jane Quinn. Rachael Redles (Coopersburg, Pa.) tied things up for Maine Maritime with her second goal of the season, but Quinn picked up her second of the game at 19:16 to put SUNY Maritime up 3-2.
Patricia Dunford (Walkersville, Md.) grabbed her first goal of the season at 16:44 in the first half, but it was Quinn once again who gave the Privateers the lead at 14:40. Leanne Lavelle added a score less than a minute later to give SUNY Maritime a 5-3 lead. Redles connected on her second goal of the day to cut the Privateer lead to 5-4. SUNY Maritime scored two-unanswered goals to finish up the first half with a 7-4 lead.
In the second half, the Mariners saw goals from Libby and Ally Fuehrer (Freeport, Maine), but nine Privateer goals overpowered Maine Maritime, who falls to 0-2 on the season. The Privateers improve to 1-2 overall.
Briana Obshatkin (Dedham, Mass.) and Dunford scooped up five ground balls each, while Obshatkin and Tori Cooper (Saco, Maine) recorded a pair of caused turnovers apiece. Ashlee Knight (Anson, Maine) had 10 saves in net for the Mariners.
Quinn finished the evening with a game-high four goals, seven caused turnovers and five ground balls, while adding three assists. Brady contributed three goals for the Privateers and Christina Finnen had nine shots in net for SUNY.
Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. against Massachusetts Maritime in Throggs Neck, N.Y. for day two of the Inaugural Maritime Cup.
