Buccaneers Best Mariners

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse dropped a non-conference matchup against Massachusetts Maritime 16-6, on Saturday afternoon in day two of the Maritime Cup.

The Buccaneers struck first when Stephanie Hunt picked up an unassisted score at 27:48. Patricia Dunford (Walkersville, Md.) tied things up for the Mariners on an assist from Rachael Redles (Coopersburg, Pa.) at 26:03.

Massachusetts Maritime scored back-to-back goals to take a 3-1 lead before Tori Cooper (Saco, Maine) picked up her first goal of the season at 21:20 to bring the Mariners within one. The Buccaneers scored three-straight goals to jump out to a 6-2 lead. Redles picked up her fourth goal of the season at 10:19, but Ashley Solari grabbed a free-position goal at 4:02 to send the Buccaneers into the half with a 7-3 lead.

In the second half, the Buccaneers scored four-unanswered goals to take a commanding 11-3 lead. Briana Obshatkin (Dedham, Mass.) started the scoring for the Mariners in the final half, sparking a two-goal run backed by a Taylor O'Malley (Middletown, R.I.) goal to cut the Buccaneers lead to 11-5. Massachusetts Maritime outscored the Mariners 5-1 in the final nine minutes of the game to claim the 16-6 victory.

Obshatkin and Redles led the Mariners with a goal and an assist each, Obshatkin and Lillian Slazas scooped up three ground balls apiece, and Ally Fuehrer (Freeport, Maine) recorded seven draw controls, while adding a goal in the final minute.

Solari and Molly Smith led the Buccaneers with four goals each, Brianna Pingree recorded three goals, and Christina Murphy added a pair of scores. Hunt scooped up a game-leading eight ground balls, while Dahlia Seggelin contributed a game-high three caused turnovers. 

Ashlee Knight (Anson, Maine) was strong in goal for the Mariners, stopping 11 shots, while Deb Langley picked up the win in net for the Buccaneers, splitting time in goal with Mikayla Correia. The pair combined to stop eight shots.

The Mariners will host the University of Maine for an exhibition on Wednesday, March 18 at 6:00 p.m.
