Mariners Notch First Ever Win in Program History

Box Score

CASTLETON, Vt. – Maine Maritime received six goals from six different players as the Mariners notched their first ever program NCAA win and first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory of the season with a 6-5 win over Green Mountain College on Friday evening at Spartan Stadium.

Green Mountain's (1-4, 0-2 NAC) Hannah Davis opened the scoring just a minute and a half into the first half when she found her own rebound and put it past Mariner goalie Ashlee Knight (Anson, Maine). Teammate Catie Brewster added to the lead for the hosts less than three minutes later as she converted a free position shot to make it 2-0.

Maine Maritime (1-5, 1-2 NAC) roared right back with a pair of goals to knot the score at 2-2 as Rachael Redles (Coopersburg, Pa.) and Briana Obshatkin (Dedham, Mass.) each tallied unassisted markers.

Brewster scored her second of the half at the 13:21 mark to restore the Eagles lead, but with the clock ticking down towards halftime, Redles found a streaking Taylor O'Malley (Middletown, R.I.) crashing the crease to even the score at 3-3 heading into the break.

Green Mountain possessed the ball for the majority of the beginning of the second half, but it was Tori Cooper (Saco, Maine) who found a break in the Eagle defense and bounced one past the Eagle keeper Casie Sharp as the Mariners took their first lead of the game and of their inaugural season.

The Eagles received another goal from Brewster on a move from behind the net after being freed up by a pass from Rebecca Girouard, tying the score at 4-4 with 17:08 to play.

Maine Maritime retook the lead, 5-4, at the 12:46 mark when Patricia Dunford (Walkersville, Md.) scored on a free position shot and Ally Fuehrer (Freeport, Maine) added another free position goal just over a minute later to give the Mariners a 6-4 lead.

Brewster grabbed her fourth goal of the game with 1:53 left to cut the deficit to 6-5, but the Mariners won the draw and hung on for the victory.

Green Mountain edged the Mariners in shots, outshooting the visitors 16-13, but lost the battle on the ground as Maine Maritime held a 17-10 advantage in groundballs.

Dunford led the Mariners with a game-high four ground balls, four caused turnovers, and two draw controls, while Obshatkin scooped up three ground balls and Abby Yeo (Bucksport, Maine), Morgan Maxwell (Windham, Maine) and Knight scooped up two ground balls each.

Knight collected her first ever win in net for the Mariners turning aside five shots, while Sharp suffered the loss in goal for the Eagles, posting five saves.

Maine Maritime returns to action on Thursday, April 2 when they travel to Southern Maine.
