CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse fell to Castleton on Saturday afternoon, 20-6 in North Atlantic Conference action at Ritchie Field.
The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead following goals from Brianna MacKay and Mariah Lesure.
Rachael Redles (Coopersburg, Pa.) cut Castleton's lead to one with an unassisted strike at 27:53.
Castleton went on a six-goal run to take a 8-1 lead before Redles and
Taylor O'Malley (Middletown, R.I.) scored back-to-back goals for the Mariners to bring it to within 8-3. The Spartans closed out the first half with five-consecutive goals to take a 13-3 lead into the half.
In the second half, the Spartans extended their lead to 19-3 following six-straight goals. The Mariners got three-straight goals from
Tori Cooper (Saco, Maine),
Briana Obshatkin (Dedham, Mass.) and Redles to make it 19-6 with 3:12 remaining in the game. Castleton added a goal in the final minute of the game to secure the 20-6 victory.
Redles finished the game with three goals on six shots, while Obshatkin added a goal and an assist on two shots.
Patricia Dunford (Walkersville, Md.) led the Mariners with four draw controls, Cooper scooped up a game-high six ground balls and
Lillian Slazas (Stockton Springs, Maine) added a team-best two caused turnovers.
Ashlee Knight (Anson, Maine) stopped eight shots in net for the Mariners, while Meghan Els recorded six saves in net to pick up the victory for the Spartans.
Maddy DaCosta and Brianna MacKay led Castleton's attack with three goals and three assists each, while Brandi Whittemore and Grace Johnson added three goals of their own.
The Mariners fall to 1-8 on the season and 1-4 in the NAC, while the Spartans improve to 11-2 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the conference.
In a ceremony prior to the game the Mariners honored their four seniors;
Lillian Slazas,
Taylor O'Malley,
Ally Fuehrer (Freeport, Maine), and
Abby Yeo (Bucksport, Maine).

The game was also the One Love Game, honoring the One Love Foundation. Both the Mariners and Spartans wore shooting shirts with the One Love Foundation logo prior to the start of the game.
