Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer fell 2-0 to Castleton University on Sunday afternoon in the regular season finale for both teams. The Mariners secured the fifth seed in the upcoming NAC Tournament.
Castleton's Thomas Kirk broke the scoreless draw in the 25th minute on an unassisted score, and Josh Mathews added an insurance goal in the 57th minute on an assist from Paul Phillips to lift the Spartans over the Mariners.
Matthew Caron (Scarborough, Maine) led the Mariners offensively with four shots, while teammate Dalton Moore (Hollis Center, Maine) added two shots.
Kyle Townsend (Hampden, Maine) tallied seven saves for the Mariners in net, while Aaron Parker tallied five stops in net in the victory, for the Spartans.
With the loss, the Mariners conclude their regular season at 6-10-1 overall and 5-4 in the conference and as the fifth seed they will travel to Husson University on Saturday, October 29, for a NAC Quarterfinal matchup. The Spartans clinched the second seed and receive a bye in the first round.
Thomas earned the No. 1 seed for the 2016 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men's Soccer Championship, which begins with quarterfinal matchups on campus sites Saturday, October 29.
The Terriers (11-4-1 overall) claimed the top seed in the conference tournament after posting an unblemished 9-0 record in NAC play and will earn a bye in Saturday's quarterfinal round. Second-seeded Castleton (7-8-2 overall, 7-2 NAC) will also earn a bye in the quarterfinals.
Colby-Sawyer (9-6-1, 6-2-1) claimed the No. 3 seed, while Husson (8-6-2, 6-2-1), Maine Maritime (6-10-1, 5-4), and New England College (9-9, 5-4) earned the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 seeds respectively to complete the six-team tournament field.
NAC predetermined tiebreaking procedures were used to seed teams with identical conference winning percentages.
Two quarterfinal contests will be played on Saturday, as No. 3 Colby-Sawyer will host No. 6 New England College and No. 4 Husson will host No. 5 Maine Maritime. Both quarterfinal game times will be announced early this week.
Quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinal round which will be played on Tuesday, November 1. Top-seeded Thomas will host the winner of the Husson/Maine Maritime quarterfinal, while No. 2 Castleton will host the winner of the Colby-Sawyer/NEC quarterfinal. Semifinal game times will be released at a later date.
Semifinal winners will square off for the conference championship on Saturday, November 5, at a time to be determined at the site of the higher seed.
The NAC Champion will receive an automatic berth to the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.
