Box Score BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse fell to Massachusetts Maritime on Sunday afternoon 12-3, in the third and final day of the Second Annual Maritime Classic and the Second Annual Admiral's Cup.
The Buccaneers built a 7-0 lead following back-to-back goals from Stephanie Hunt in the first half. Rachael Redles (Coopersburg, Pa.) put the Mariners on the board with an unassisted score at 6:05, but Hunt added another goal in the final minute of the half to give the Buccaneers an 8-1 lead at the intermission.
Redles opened up the scoring in the second half on another unassisted goal at 23:00. The Buccaneers scored three-straight to take an 11-2 lead with 9:14 to go. Christina Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) found the back of the net for the Mariners with 8:46 to play, but Massachusetts Maritime held off the Mariners and added another goal with under five minutes to play to claim the victory.
Sierra James (Campton, N.H.) stopped 16 shots in net for the Mariners, while Mikayla Correia recorded nine saves in net for the Buccaneers.
Redles and James led the Mariners with three ground balls apiece, while Mary Shea (Brownfield, Maine) won two draw controls.
Christina Murphy led Massachusetts Maritime with five goals and an assist, Hunt ended the afternoon with three goals and an assist, and Dahlia Seggelin rounded out the Buccaneers with multiple goals, scoring twice and dishing out a helper. Shavonne Boyle tallied a game-high six ground balls and caused a game-high four turnovers.
The Mariners fall to 0-2 on the season and will return to action next weekend when they hit the road to take on Purchase on Saturday, March 19 and the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Sunday, March 20. Massachusetts Maritime improves to 1-1 on the season.
