The Mariners and Eagles last met last season in the NAC Quarterfinals. Earlier in the season the Mariners defeated the Eagles 22-2 in regular season conference play.
Dean Samuelson (Ellsworth, Maine) led the Mariners with four goals, three assists and five ground balls. Peter Moore added four goals and a ground ball, while Bronson Guimond added a goal and a pair of helpers, and Nicholas Betti chipped in with a pair of goals.
Jack Tragert contributed a goal and an assist and Mike Fuller and Tim Grant (East Northport, N.Y.) added the other goals for the Mariners. James Wilgus and Jacob Rondeau (Richmond, R.I.) split time in net for the Mariners, combining for 10 saves.
Dominic Wright and Richard Aberle Jr. led the way for the Eagles with two goals, while Nick Parsons dished out three assists. Nate Laymon scooped up seven ground balls, and Carl Dietheim scooped up seven ground balls, while stopping five shots in net.
Maine Maritime Academy's Last Game: Dean Samuelson (Ellsworth, Maine) scored three goals and dished out an assist in Maine Maritime Academy's 17-6 loss to Curry College last week.
The Colonels took a 4-0 lead into the second quarter, and added a man-up goal at 12:15 to take a 5-0 lead. Alex Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine) put the Mariners on the board with an unassisted goal at 9:58, and Tim Grant (East Northport, N.Y.) found Grant-Roy once again at 9:32 for a man-up goal to cut the deficit to just three goals.
Curry added two more goals to close out the half, taking a 7-2 lead into the intermission.
Samuelson scored his first goal of the game at 12:04 in the third quarter, and added another at 8:48, but Curry scored six times in the third to take a 13-4 lead.
Michael Martel (Biddeford, Maine) added his third goal of the season with 8:04 remaining in the fourth quarter, and Samuelson secured the hat trick with a man-up goal at 3:17 on a pass from Brendan Broderick (Massena, N.Y.). The Colonels added four more goals in the fourth to claim the 17-6 victory.
Samuelson ended the afternoon with three goals, two ground balls and an assist, Grant-Roy tallied five ground balls, two goals, two caused turnovers and an assist and Martel grabbed a goal and dished out an assist, while causing one turnover and scooping up a ground ball. Ryan McLellan (Sidney, Maine) two turnovers, and scooped up a ground ball, while Cody Schell (Pasadena, Md.) stopped 12 shots in net, and scooped up a team-high six ground balls.
Matt Serra led Curry with four goals and an assist, while teammates Mj Urbano, Ed Johnson, Brandon Flaim and Tom Cashin added a pair of goals each. Chris Bronander led all players with four caused turnovers, while Steven Grogan scooped up a game-high nine ground balls, going 13-of-19 from the faceoff. Shane O'Brien earned the win in net for the Colonels, stopping eight shots.
Norwich University's Last Game: Norwich University fell 11-4 to Coast Guard Academy on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.
Senior Ryan McCarthy and sophomore Ian Kennedy paced the Cadets with two goals with sophomore Josh Jenkins and senior Matt Flaherty crediting an assist each.
Coast Guard was led by senior Louis DePalis with a hat-trick, while senior Justin Huemme and freshman Anthony Wyler notched a pair of goals. Freshman Benner Geurtsen, senior Robert McKenna and junior Blaise Curtis each scored a goal in the win.
Both teams battled hard in the first 15 minutes of the opening faceoff with Coast Guard getting on the board first at the 6:49 mark on a Huemme goal. Kennedy would score the equalizer for Norwich with Jenkins picking up the assist on the play, before the Bears got ahead less than three minutes later after DePaolis drilled the ball into the back of the net. The Cadets would make it a 2-2 game after McCarthy scored unassisted with just 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Both teams traded goals in the first two minutes of the second quarter before the Bears pulled off 16 shots in the frame and scored four-straight to lead 7-3 at the break.
The Cadets looked to get back on track in the second half as Kennedy notched his second goal to open the third quarter but the 13 turnovers and a strong defensive effort by the Bears kept Norwich off the board for the remainder of the stanza. Coast Guard scored four more over the next 16 minutes on 16 shots, to close out the game with the 11-4 victory.
Freshman goalie Ian Kriger came up with 11 saves on 22 shots faced for Norwich in between the pipes, while Coast Guard's freshman Trey Johnson recorded six saves on 10 shots for his second win of the season.
Green Mountain College's Last Game: Green Mountain fell to Regis College, 19-2, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening.
Alex Ferran was the centerpiece of the Pride offense on a night that saw the hosts outshoot the guests by a 51 to 26 margin. The attackman also added three helpers on the evening. The Pride scooped up more groundballs than their counterparts (43-25).
AJ Karofsky added four goals and an assist, while teammate Collin Spillane recorded a hat trick and matched Ferran with three assists. Andrew O'Reilly chipped in two goals and three assists as well. Specialist Jack O'Brien won 21-of-25 (84%) of his faceoff attempts and scooped up a team-high 14 groundballs.
Ferran opened the scoring with a trio of markers sandwiched around a goal by Karosky to give the hosts an early 4-0 lead. The Eagles closed out the quarter with goals from Nick Parsons and David Gerken to narrow the lead to 4-2 at the end of play in the opening stanza.
Regis held the Eagles scoreless the rest of the way while tallying 15 unanswered goals en route to victory.
D.J. Barrile made six saves on his way to his fifth win of the campaign. Tyler Estes came on in relief for the fourth quarter and stopped nine shots in 15 minutes. Arun Falk took the loss for the Eagles despite making 12 saves.
The Mariners: Alex Grant-Roy leads the Mariners with six goals and eight caused turnovers, while Dean Samuelson has five goals and a team-high three assists. Tim Grant has a team-leading 23 groundballs and Cody Schell has tallied 59 saves in net.
Maine Maritime averages 5.25 goals per game, 21.3 shots per game and 31.3 percent from the faceoff.
The Cadets: Ryan McCarthy leads the Cadets with ten goals and six assists, while Pete Soonthornprapuet leads the team with 15 ground balls, and both Zach Adler and Thomas Carlson have caused six turnovers. Ian Kriger has 49 saves in net, while allowing 57 goals.
Norwich University averages six goals per game, 25 shots per game and 39.3 percent from the faceoff.
The Eagles: Brendan McKenna leads the Eagles with nine goals, while Nick Parsons leads the team with five assists and 32 groundballs. Nate Laymon leads the team with seven caused turnovers, and Arun Falk leads the team with 40 saves, while allowing 66 goals.
Green Mountain College averages 5.8 goals per game, 34.4 shots per game and 31.2 percent from the faceoff.
Coaching Connection: Friday marks the return of former Maine Maritime Academy Assistant Football and Lacrosse Coach Jeff Fell. Fell currently serves as an Assistant Football and Lacrosse Coach at Norwich University. Previously, Fell spent two and a half seasons at Maine Maritime Academy.
