Friday's Game: Maine Maritime Academy (11-10, 7-7 NAC) vs. Castleton University (13-8, 11-3 NAC), 7:30 p.m., Smith Gymnasium, Castine, Maine.

Saturday's Game: Maine Maritime Academy vs. Green Mountain College (0-19, 0-14 NAC), 3:00 p.m., Smith Gymnasium, Castine, Maine.

Series Histories: The Spartans hold a 24-6 all-time advantage over the Mariners, including 17-straight wins. When playing in Castine, the Mariners are 3-11.

January 21, 2017: Castleton University 63 – Maine Maritime Academy 53

Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) opened up the game with a three, and teammates Chloe Smedley (York, Maine) and Alex Winchester (Hampden, Maine) added baskets to give the Mariners a 7-0 lead with 5:14 to go in the first quarter. The Spartans battled back, capping off the quarter with a five-point run to tie things up at 9-9.

Back-to-back baskets by Smedley gave the Mariners a 13-11 lead to open up the second quarter, but the Spartans began to pull away outscoring the Mariners 11-2, to take a 22-15 lead at 3:10. Caitlin Kane (Wilton, Maine) scored five-straight to cap off the second quarter, sending the Mariners into the half down by four (26-22).

The Mariners outscored the Spartans 13-12 in the third quarter, to cut the deficit to 38-35. Castleton scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to take a 10-point lead with 5:24 remaining. The Spartans took a 15-point lead at 1:27 (57-42), but the Mariners continued to fight, using a three-point play from Ogden to close the gap to 12 points with 50 seconds to go and a four-point run, capped off by a steal by Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) that led to a Emily Melick (Sudbury, Mass.) jump shot, to close the Spartans' lead to 60-51. Castleton's Makayla Farrara hit three-of-four from the line in the closing 21 seconds to keep the Spartans on top.

Smedley led the Mariners with 16 points, five rebounds, and two steals, Odgen ended the afternoon with 14 points, four rebounds, and two steals and Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) added a double-double of 11 points, 13 rebounds, two steals, two blocks, and an assist.

Taylor Raiche led Castleton with a game-high 18 points, four rebounds, and a steal and Farrara ended the game with 16 points, four rebounds, and one assist.

January 20, 2017: Maine Maritime Academy 83 – Maine Maritime Academy 28

The Mariners held the Eagles to just one point in the first quarter, building a 30-1 advantage. Green Mountain fought back in the second quarter, outscoring the Mariners 17-15, but Maine Maritime took a 45-18 lead into the intermission and never looked back claiming the 83-28 victory.

Alayne Felix led the Mariners with 17 points, going 8-for-9 from the floor, four rebounds, two assists and a steal, Kristi Willey added 12 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals and Caitlin Kane added 11 points, three assists, two steals, and a rebound. Emily Melick led the Mariners with four assists, and also added nine points and three rebounds, Melinda Ogden and Avae Traina (Newcastle, Maine) led the Mariners with five rebounds each, while also adding seven points and six points, respectively.

Mercedes Rideout led the Eagles with 10 points, two steals, a rebound, and an assist, while Rachel Moore added six points, and Taylor Hill tallied a game-high seven rebounds.

Maine Maritime Academy's Last Game: Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball fell to Lyndon State College, 64-61 in overtime last Saturday afternoon, in North Atlantic Conference action.

The Mariners took a 5-2 lead early in the game, after a layup from Caitlin Kane and a three from Alex Winchester, but the Hornets outscored Maine Maritime 19-13 in the first quarter to build a six-point lead.

Alayne Felix and Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) hit baskets to open up the second quarter, cutting the Hornets' lead to 19-17, but Lyndon maintained a narrow advantage and entered halftime with a 29-24 lead.

Felix scored seven-unanswered points to close out the third quarter, giving the Mariners a 37-36 lead. The Hornets took back the lead early in the fourth, following a pair of free throws from Mikayla Hodge, but Felix hit another layup to give the Mariners a 39-37 lead.

Lyndon answered with eight-unanswered points to build a 46-39 lead at 8:03, but the Mariners battled back with a seven-point run, highlighted by five points from Kane to cut the deficit to one (46-45). The two teams exchanged scores before Melinda Ogden sank a three at 4:10 and Felix hit one from the line to give the Mariners a 51-50 lead at 3:21.

The two teams swapped layups and Hodge hit a three for the Hornets to give Lyndon a 55-53 lead at 2:28. Felix hit another layup at 1:10 to tie the game up at 55-55 and after two missed shots by the Hornets, Odgen pulled down a crucial defensive rebound in the final seconds to send the game into overtime.

Both teams hit two free throws to open up the overtime period. The Hornets scored five-straight to take a 61-57 lead but Winchester made a layup to close the gap to three with 2:05 to play. Alissa Mitchell hit one from the line, to give the Hornets a 62-59 advantage with 33 seconds remaining. Kristi Willey hit a jumper with 15 seconds to play, closing the Hornets' lead to 62-61 but Hodge made both shots from the charity stripe. The Mariners' last second three-point try missed the mark and Lyndon held on for the win.

Felix led the Mariners with 21 points, six rebounds, two steals, two blocks, and an assist and Kane ended the afternoon with 14 points, five rebounds, and an assist. Willey led the Mariners with eight rebounds and three assists.

Hodge tallied a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double to lead Lyndon, while also adding two assists. Gabrielle Foy recorded 12 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals, and Faith Richards chipped in with 10 points, one rebound, and an assist.

Castleton University's Last Game: Castleton defeated UMaine-Farmington, 65-29, last Saturday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference women's basketball game at Glenbrook Gym.

Amanda Beatty shot 10-of-14 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line for 25 points, plus she led the Spartans with six rebounds. Ashlie Fay hit 5-of-6 shots from the field as she finished with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, and three steals, and Makayla Farrara contributed eight points, four rebounds, and two blocked shots.

Castleton went on an 8-0 scoring run over a two-minute span in the first quarter, punctuated by a three-pointer from Farrara, to open a 12-4 advantage. A three-pointer by Lindsay Sabo and a jumper by Farrara extended the Spartan lead into double digits, but a three-pointer by Sara Lamb late in the quarter brought the Beavers to within eight at 18-10.

Beatty scored the first six points and the last six points of the second quarter as Castleton held Maine-Farmington without a field goal in the quarter, outscoring the Beavers 18-3 to take a 36-13 lead into the locker room at halftime. After Beatty made a layup to open the third quarter, UMF scored six straight points, but the Beavers were held to just one field goal in the third quarter as each team scored just nine points in the period.

The Spartans opened the fourth quarter with 10 unanswered points before UMF's Cheyenne Malloy hit a three-pointer with 4:34 remaining in regulation. Morgan Crocker made four free throws for the Beavers' other points of the period, while Ajla Medic hit two three-pointers down the stretch to cap Castleton's convincing victory.

As a team, Castleton shot 45.0 percent (27-of-60) from the field, including 6-of-21 from the free throw line. The Spartans scored 31 points off 30 Maine-Farmington turnovers while buckling down on defense and not allowing a point off 14 Castleton turnovers.

Crocker led Maine-Farmington with 10 points, but the Beavers were held to 16.2 percent (6-of-37) field goal shooting, including 2-of-11 from behind the three-point line, plus they hit 55.6 percent (15-of-27) of their free throw attempts. The rebounding battle was a draw, with each team pulling down 38 boards.

Green Mountain College's Last Game: Green Mountain College fell to Thomas College, 65-41, last Saturday afternoon.

Amira Jones led the way for the Terriers scoring 20 points, grabbing seven rebounds and adding three assists. Her 11th point of the game caused a brief stoppage as the junior center was recognized for scoring her 1000th career point. Karli Stubbs contributed 13 points while Abby Nielsen led the reserves with 11 points and five rebounds. Tess McClenahan grabbed a game-high ten rebounds.

Green Mountain was led by Taylor Hill who scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high-tying nine rebounds. Suzanna Moses chipped in with 11 points, while Laney Trammell recorded six points and nine boards off the bench.

The Eagles jumped out to the early lead on the back of a pair of three-pointers from Moses and Mercedes Rideout. Stubbs' three-pointer gave the Terriers a 7-6 lead which became a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.

Moses hit a trio of free throws toward the close of the first quarter to reduce the deficit to 13-12, but that would be as close as the Eagles would get through to the final buzzer.

The Terriers outscored the hosts 39-21 in the opening half and although the Eagles fared better in the second half, the Terriers still held a 26-20 scoring edge.

Thomas shot 38.8 percent (26-67) from the field compared to the 21 percent mark (13-62) of the Eagles. The Eagles were more accurate from the charity stripe hitting on 10-of-12 shots. The visitors struggled from the free throw line converting at only a 53.3 percent (8-of-15) clip. Thomas took advantage of the Eagles lack of size down low and outrebounded GMC 58-37 and registered a 28-10 edge in points in the paint.

The Mariners: The Mariners average 64.2 points per game, while allowing opponents to score 55.5 points per game. The team is shooting 40.4 percent from the floor, 29.6 percent from three-point land and 68.1 percent from the line. The Mariners average 39.9 rebounds and 16.4 assists per game.

Alayne Felix leads the Mariners with 17.4 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game, and Caitlin Kane and Kristi Willey lead the team with 2.7 assists per game and 1.4 steals per game.

The Spartans: The Spartans average 56.4 points per game, while allowing opponents to score 46.1 points per game. Castleton averages 38.7 rebounds per game and 12.7 assists per game.

Makayla Farrara leads the Spartans with 13.6 points per game, and teammate Amanda Beatty averages 11.6 points per game. Morgan Raiche leads Castleton with 6.1 rebounds per game and 1.3 blocks per game. Ashlie Fay leads the team with 2.9 assists per game and 2.2 steals per game.

The Eagles: The Eagles average 37.8 points per game, while allowing opponents to score 76.4 points per game. Green Mountain averages 23.8 percent from the floor, 24.1 percent from three-point land and 56.0 percent from the line. The Eagles average 33.3 rebounds and 8.5 assists per game.

Mercedes Rideout leads the Eagles with 10.4 points per game, Taylor Hill leads the team with 7.8 rebounds per game, Rachel Moore averages 2.2 assists per game and Kali DeMarco and Hill lead the team with 1.3 steals per game.
