Women's Lacrosse Shatters Records in Season-Opening Victory over SUNY

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse cruised to a 13-2 victory over SUNY Maritime, in non-conference action on Friday afternoon at Ritchie Field.

In the Mariners' first-ever season or home opener victory, the team broke numerous single-game records including most goals scored (13), most points (17), and most free position goals (3).

Tori Cooper (Saco, Maine) put the Mariners on the board at 26:56 on a feed from behind the net from Ashlee Knight (Anson, Maine). The Privateers scored less than a minute later when Miller Condrack connected on a free position shot to tie the game up at 1-1.

Madison Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal at 22:28 and Leah Libby (Paris, Maine) grabbed her first goal of the season on a pass from Shelby O'Neil (Bar Harbor, Maine), to give the Mariners a 3-1 lead.

With 15 minutes to play in the first half SUNY's Ciara Murphy closed Maine Maritime's lead to one, but Cooper and O'Neil added free position goals to send the Mariners into halftime with a 5-2 lead.

Maine Maritime's defense was sharp, holding the Privateers scoreless in the second half, while Cooper picked up where she left off, grabbing an unassisted goal at 23:12. Briana Obshatkin (Dedham, Mass.) picked up her first goal of the season, just a few minutes later to give the Mariners a 7-2 lead.

Despite being a man-down, Cooper picked up another free position goal and later added an unassisted strike at 18:40 to give the Mariners a 9-2 lead. Knight picked up her first goal of the season at 17:38 and less than a minute later Obshatkin snuck a free position shot into net to extend the lead to 11-2. Barry tallied her second goal of the game, and then dished out an assist to Libby to round out the scoring.

Cooper tied the MMA single-game record with five goals and also picked up five ground balls, while Barry, Libby and Obshatkin recorded two goals each. In her collegiate lacrosse debut, O'Neil led the Mariners with six draw controls and four caused turnovers, while also tallying a goal. Knight added a goal and a assist and Barry led the team with a pair of helpers.

Sierra James (Campton, N.H.) earned the victory in net for the Mariners, stopping six shots, while also scooping up five ground balls, and tallying a caused turnover.

Jessica Yee and Murphy led the Privateers with three caused turnovers, and Murphy also led the team with five ground balls. Esmeralda Hernandez tallied four saves in the loss.

Maine Maritime dominated the draw, with 12 draw controls compared to SUNY's five and won the battle of ground balls 30-23.

The Mariners improve to 1-0, while the Privateers fall to 0-2. Maine Maritime opens up North Atlantic Conference play when they return to action next Saturday, March 18 against Lyndon in Castine.
