Mariners Cruise to Victory Over Thomas

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse defeated Thomas College 16-4 on Wednesday evening in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Ritchie Field.

Tori Cooper (Saco, Maine) put the Mariners on the board first with her 27th goal of the season, on a pass from Ashlee Knight (Anson, Maine) at 28:40. The Terriers responded just 25 seconds later with a goal from Samantha Greenlaw, but the Mariners scored five-unanswered goals to build a 6-1 lead with 11:29 remaining in the first half. Tiffany Weeks added the second goal for the Terriers at 7:05, cutting the deficit to 6-2, but Cooper added two free position goals to send the Mariners into halftime with an 8-2 lead.

The Terriers struck first in the second half, but the Mariners answered with four-consecutive goals and never looked back, cruising to the 16-4 win.

Cooper led the Mariners with a Maine Maritime single-game record seven goals, and dished out an assist, while tallying three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Madison Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) added her third hat-trick of the season, while dishing out two assists, Briana Obshatkin (Dedham, Mass.) added two goals, an assist, seven ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers, and Knight finished the evening with one goal and two assists, while scooping up three ground balls and causing one turnover. Leah Libby, Haley Eckert (Harrington, Maine) and Shelby O'Neil (Bar Harbor, Maine) added the other goals for the Mariners. O'Neil led the Mariners with six caused turnovers.

Greenlaw led the Terriers with two goals, Weeks added one goal and an assist, while leading the team with six draw controls, and both Weeks and Hailey Mullen caused three turnovers.

In net, Sierra James (Campton, N.H.) stopped six shots in the win, while Thomas' Sydni Collier stopped 11 shots in the loss, and scooped up a team-leading six ground balls.

The Mariners improve to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the NAC, while the Terriers fall to 2-9 on the season and 2-5 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, April 22 at New England College at 1:00 pm.
