NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse defeated Norwich University 13-12 on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action on Sabine Field.

Tori Cooper (Saco, Maine) put the Mariners on the board first on a free position goal with 25:17 to play in the first half, but less than a minute later Norwich's Kathryn Albretsen added an unassisted goal to tie the game up. Cooper and Albretsen exchanged free position goals to make it 2-2 before Madison Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) picked up her sixth goal of the season on a pass from Briana Obshatkin (Dedham, Mass.), and Cooper secured a hat trick at 13:11 to give the Mariners a 4-2 lead.

The Cadets responded with a pair of goals, but both Barry and Obshatkin answered with goals to give the Mariners a 6-4 with 3:07 remaining in the half. Albretsen added her fourth goal of the game in with 2:06 to go, cutting Maine Maritime's lead to 6-5 entering halftime.

Obshatkin added her second goal of the game to open up the second half, on an assist from Leah Libby, but the Cadets scored three-unanswered goals to take their first lead of the game (8-7) with 22:26 to play. Kristen Gier (Cary, Ill.) added her first collegiate goal, at 21:27, sparking a three-goal run for the Mariners to take back a 10-8 lead.

Once again Norwich scored three-straight to tie the game at 11-11 with 11:26 remaining, but Cooper and Ashlee Knight (Anson, Maine) added goals late in the half to give the Mariners a 13-11 lead and despite a late Norwich goal from Chapel Guarnieri, Maine Maritime hung on for the 13-12 victory.

Cooper led the Mariners with five goals, five draw controls, and four ground balls, Barry and Obshatkin each added three goals, while Obshatkin also dished out an assist and scooped up two ground balls. Gier and Knight added the other goals for the Mariners.

Albretsen ended the afternoon with six goals to lead the Cadets while Guarnieri tallied two goals and caused four turnovers. Olivia Bloom joined Guarnieri with two goals and junior Meaghan McGrath scored a goal and recorded two assists.

In net, Maine Maritime's Sierra James (Campton, N.H.) was impressive stopping 15 shots in the victory, while Norwich's Teresa Segreti turned away three shots in the loss.

The Cadets led Maine Maritime in shots taken (38-to-22), ground balls (25-to-15) and draw controls (15-to-11). The Mariners, however, converted seven-of-nine free position attempts, led by four free position goals from Cooper.

The Mariners improve to 3-2 overall, while the Cadets fall to 4-4 on the season. Maine Maritime returns to action this weekend when they travel to Vermont to take on a pair of North Atlantic Conference opponents, Green Mountain on Saturday and Johnson State College on Sunday.
