Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse fought back from a 7-3 deficit at halftime to defeat UMaine-Farmington 10-7 on Wednesday evening in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Ritchie Field.
With the win the Mariners improve to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the NAC, while the Beavers fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, March 31 at Castleton University for a 3:30 pm NAC matchup.
Carly Raymond put the Beavers on the board first at 27:01, but the Mariners used back-to-back goals from Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) and Shelby O'Neil (Bar Harbor, Maine) to take a 2-1 lead at 19:09. The Beavers answered with six-unanswered goals, highlighted by three goals from Raymond, to take a 7-2 lead, but O'Neil added a goal with 11 seconds remaining to cut the Beavers' lead to 7-3 entering halftime.
Madison Barry (Stoneham, Maine) added her first goal of the game 61 seconds into the second half to close the gap to 7-4, and O'Neil scored back-to-back goals, including a man-down goal to bring the Mariners within one (7-6). Adams and Barry put the Mariners up by one (8-7) with free position goals and Madison Savary (Bath, Maine) and Adams added goals late in the game to secure the victory.
O'Neil ended the afternoon with four goals and two ground balls, while Adams recorded a hat-trick, five ground balls, five draw controls and a caused turnover and Barry contributed two goals, an assist, a ground ball and a caused turnover. Savary chipped in with a goal and an assist, while also scooping up two ground balls. Morgan Libby (Brunswick, Maine) scooped up a game-high seven ground balls, while also recording three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Raymond led the Beavers with four goals, an assist, five draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers while teammate Keilly Lynch tallied two goals, three draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnovers.
In net, Christina Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) tallied nine saves, six ground balls and two caused turnovers in the victory, while Farmington's Heather Boland stopped four shots in the loss.
The Mariners won the battle of the ground balls 31-23, but the Beavers edged the Mariners in draw controls, 10-8. Maine Maritime went 2-for-5 on free position shots while the Beavers came up empty on all three of their attempts.
