CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse fell to UMaine-Farmington 8-7 on Wednesday evening at Ritchie Field.

How it Happened: Madison Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) put the Mariners on the board at 28:37, but the Beavers built a 3-1 lead. Christina Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) and Barry added goals to tie the game at 3-3 and the two teams exchanged goals late in the game to enter halftime deadlocked at 4-4. 

Farmington took a 5-4 lead on a goal from Kaya Backman at 27:05 in the second half, but a free position goal from Sierra James (Campton, N.H.) tied the game at 5-5 at 20:13. The Beavers orchestrated a three-goal run led by back-to-back goals from Isabella Monbouquette to take a 8-5 lead with just over six minutes to play. The Mariners fought back with two late-game goals from Wilson and James, but the Beavers hung on for the victory.

Inside the Numbers: Barry, James and Wilson led the Mariners with two goals each, while Madison Savary (Bath, Maine) added the other goal. Wilson led the Mariners with five caused turnovers and also contributed six ground balls and two draw controls, while James led the team with seven ground balls, and added a draw control and a caused turnover. 

In net, Sydney Cole (Westbrook, Maine) stopped nine shots for the Mariners.

Backman and Monbouquette led the Beavers with three goals apiece, Samantha Cross led the team with four draw controls, and goalie Sydney Booth led UMF with six ground balls, while collecting six saves in the first half.

The Beavers edged the Mariners in ground balls 36-34, but the Mariners held an 11-6 advantage in draw controls.

Up Next: The Mariners fall to 1-4 on the season, while the Beavers improve to 2-5 overall. Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, April 2 at Husson University at 3:30 pm.
