Strong Second Half Lifts Mariners Past Terriers

CASTINE, Maine -- Madison Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) and Sierra James (Campton, N.H.) tallied five goals each to lead Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse to a 16-11 victory over Thomas College on Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Field.

How it Happened: The two teams battled closely early on, until Barry scored back-to-back free position goals to send the Mariners into halftime with a 6-4 lead.

The Terriers closed the gap to one goal on two occasions to start the second half, but the Mariners went on a four-goal run to build a 12-7 lead at 15:09. The Terriers scored three-unanswered goals to cut the Mariners' lead to 14-11 with five minutes to go but Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) and James scored back-to-back goals to secure the victory for Maine Maritime.

Inside the Numbers: Barry led the Mariners with a career-high five goals, two assists, three draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover.

James added five goals, three ground balls and a caused turnover, while Adams finished the afternoon with four goals, a team-high eight draw controls and two grounds balls. Christina Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) added a goal, an assist, six ground balls, four caused turnovers and three draw controls and Julia Dillon (Norway, Maine) added a goal and three ground balls.

In net, Maine Maritime's Sydney Cole (Westbrook, Maine) tallied four saves for the victory.

Alexis Felch led the Terriers with five goals, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Nikki Bradstreet tallied two goals, three assists, eight draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

In net, Arianna Cannistraro tallied eight saves in the loss for Thomas.

The Mariners edged the Terriers in draw controls 15-14, and dominated ground balls 32-18. Maine Maritime went 7-of-10 on free position shots, while the Terriers went 3-of-4.

Up Next: The Mariners improve to 2-5 on the season, while the Terriers fall to 2-4 overall. Maine Maritime returns to action next Saturday, when they travel to Thomas College for a North Atlantic Conference matchup at 1:00 pm.
