Box Score STANDISH, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse fell to Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 15-4, on Wednesday afternoon in their season opener at the SJC Athletic Complex.
How it Happened: The Monks went on a nine-goal run to open up the game, before the Mariners answered with back-to-back goals from Kristen Gier (Cary, Ill.) and Amber Card (Bowdoin, Maine) to cut the deficit to 9-2 at 12:33.
Saint Joseph's added three more goals to take a 12-2 edge into halftime and opened up the second half with two more goals on their way to the 15-4 win.
Inside the Numbers: Gier led the Mariners with a pair of goals, while Card and Chloe Smedley (York, Maine) recorded Maine Maritime's other two goals. Olivia Harriman (Orrington, Maine) and Catherine Mahoney (Plymouth, Mass.) each tallied an assist. C. Smedley led the Mariners defensively with eight caused turnovers and seven ground balls, while Card led the Mariners with three draw controls.
Josie Ring led Saint Joseph's with four goals, two assists and a game-high nine ground balls, Logan Champlin contributed three goals and two assists while leading the Monks with eight draw controls and seven caused turnovers and Maddy Beaulieu tallied two goals and dished out eight assists.
Natasha Olearcek (Little Cranberry Island, Maine) tallied 14 saves in her collegiate debut in net for the Mariners, while Madelyn Nelson and Amanda Huang split time in net for Saint Joseph's, combining for three saves.
The Monks held a 38-13 advantage in shots, and a 31-23 advantage in ground balls.
Up Next: The Mariners fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Monks improve to 2-1 overall. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, March 7 when they take on SUNY Maritime at 11:00 am as part of the Maritime Classic hosted by Massachusetts Maritime.
