STANDISH, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse fell to Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 20-4, on Saturday afternoon in their season opener at the SJC Athletic Complex.

How it Happened: The Monks went on a 12-goal run to open up the game, before the Mariners answered when freshman Hazel Stoddard (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) scored her first career goal to make it 12-1 in favor of the Monks, with 7:32 remaining in the first half.

Saint Joseph's added one more at the end of the first half to take a 13-1 lead into halftime. The Monks added three more goals in the third quarter and four in the fourth quarter on their way to a 20-4 win.

Inside the Numbers: Stoddard led the Mariners recording her first career hat trick, while Beth Labbe (Brunswick, Maine) added a goal. Stoddard and Aubrey Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) led the Mariners defensively with a pair of caused turnovers each, while Darby Cendoma (Livonia, N.Y.) picked up four ground balls.

Lydia Dexter led the Monks with a game-high eight points on four goals and four assists, Carson Battaglia added in a hat trick, and four other Monks scored two goals each.

Charlotte Rose (Newark, Del.) picked up four saves in net for the Mariners, while Sadie Velozo (Greene, Maine) added one save in five and half minutes of relief. Jenna Shutt and Mackenzie Baston split time in net for Saint Joseph's, tallying two saves each.

The Monks held a 28-12 advantage in shots, and the Mariners 11-10 advantage in ground balls.

Up Next: The Mariners fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Monks improve to 1-0 overall. The Mariners return to action on Tuesday, March 1 when they travel to take on Lancaster Bible at 3:00 pm.
