Mariners Defeat Terriers in Conference Opener

WATERVILLE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's lacrosse beat Thomas College, 10-9 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened: After a scoreless seven minutes of play, Aubrey Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) found Lily Cook (Southwest Harbor, Maine) in front of the net to put the Mariners on the board. The Terriers answered with an unassisted goal to tie the game up 1-1. Emma White (New Sharon, Maine) found the back of the net off a pass from Cook to regain the lead in the second quarter. Thomas College then scored two quick goals before Hazel Stoddard (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) scored a goal to make the score 3-3 with 11 minutes left in the first half. The Terriers took back the lead once again after scoring two goals, then Cook ended the first half with a goal to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Terriers.

The two team went back-and-forth in the third quarter with Stoddard scoring two more goals and Thomas College scoring three to make the score 8-6 in favor of the Terriers with 8:57 left in the third quarter. The Mariners answered, scoring four straight goals, two from Cook and two from Olivia Harriman (Orrington, Maine), to regain the lead and bring the score to 10-8. Thomas College scored one more goal but the Mariners held onto their lead and claimed a 10-9 win.

Inside the Numbers: Cook led the Mariners with a career-high five points, scoring four goals and one assist, while picking up three ground balls and causing two turnovers. Stoddard added three goals, three ground balls, and one caused turnover, while Harriman chipped in two goals and two ground balls.

Mary LaRochelle led the Terriers with two goals, two assists, one ground ball, and one caused turnover. Three players also added two goals each.

Charlotte Rose (Newark, Del.) recorded 16 saves in 60 minutes for the Mariners, while Lizzy Gotay tallied 10 saves for the Terriers.

The Mariners held a 18-7 advantage in ground balls over the Terriers, while Thomas held a 30-29 advantage in shots over Maine Maritime.

Up Next: The Mariners improve to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in conference, while Thomas College falls to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, March 30 at 7:00pm when they host Husson University.
