Mariners Stumble Against Privateers

Buzzards Bay, Mass. – Maine Maritime women's lacrosse fell to SUNY Maritime (N.Y.), 21-5 Saturday afternoon at the Maritime Cup.

How it Happened: The Privateers had the hot-hand in the first quarter, scoring eight straight goals on the Mariners. Hazel Stoddard (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) answered with 00:25 left in the quarter with her first goal of the night. The Privateers started off the second quarter with two goals before Beth Labbe (Brunswick, Maine) found the back of the net. SUNY Maritime answered with a goal and Stoddard came right back with her second goal of the afternoon. The Privateers scored once again before Emma White (New Sharon, Maine) scored an unassisted goal to make the score 12-4 in favor of the Privateers. SUNY Maritime scored three goals to end the second quarter and make the score 15-4 at halftime.

The Privateers started the third quarter with two goals before Amber Card (Bowdoin, Maine) found Labbe for her last goal of the afternoon. SUNY Maritime scored four more goals on their way to a 21-5 win.

Inside the Numbers: Labbe and Stoddard both recorded two goals each, while White added one of her own. Labbe also picked up five ground balls and caused two turnovers and Stoddard and Charlotte Rose (Newark, Del.) picked up four ground balls each.

Gabrielle Nicolosi led the Privateers with five goals, while Jenna Lesiewicz added four and three more players added three. Sara Wright picked up a game-high seven ground balls and Tori Gay and Lesiewicz caused three turnovers each.

Rose tallied 11 saves for the Mariners in net, while Liz Pomaro had five saves and Tori Koenig recorded two in 30 minutes of relief. SUNY Maritime held a 36-15 advantage in shots and a 28-22 advantage in ground balls over the Mariners.

Up Next: Maine Maritime falls to 0-4 overall, while SUNY Maritime improves to 3-0 on the year. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow, March 6 at 12:00pm against Mass. Maritime in the second day of the Maritime Cup.
