Buccaneers Overpower Mariners

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Maine Maritime women's lacrosse fell to Mass. Maritime, 17-5 Sunday afternoon at the Maritime Cup.

How it Happened: The Buccaneers scored the first goal of the afternoon and the Mariners quickly answered when Aubrey Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) found Hazel Stoddard (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) for a goal. After four minutes, the Buccaneers scored another goal to regain the lead before Mitchell found the back of the net off a pass from Stoddard to tie the game 2-2 with 9:04 left in the first quarter. Mass. Maritime then scored eight straight goals to make the score 10-2. Mitchell scored her second goal of the afternoon off another pass from Stoddard before the Buccaneers scored three more goals to bring the score to 13-3 at halftime.

Maine Maritime opened up the second half with a goal from Lily Cook (Southwest Harbor, Maine) assisted by Mitchell. The Buccaneers answered with four more goals and Stoddard ended the game with her second goal off an assist from Mitchell to make the final score 17-5 in favor of Mass. Maritime.

Inside the Numbers: Mitchell led the Mariners with two goals, on two shots on goal, three assists, and two ground balls. Stoddard also had two goals, along with five ground balls and two assists. Cook added another goal for the Mariners and Beth Labbe (Brunswick, Maine) picked up a game-high seven ground balls.

Alyssa DiScipio scored a game-high 10 goals, while tallying three assists and five ground balls. Allie Dickson added three more goals and Cassie Llewellyn chipped in two.

Charlotte Rose (Newark, N.J.) tallied six saves in net for the Mariners, while Aviva Beringhause recorded nine.

The Buccaneers held a 29-20 advantage in shots and a 26-25 advantage in ground ball over the Mariners.

Up Next: The Mariners fall to 0-5 overall, while Mass. Maritime improves to 2-1 on the year. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, March 19 at 2:30pm when they host Thomas College in their home opener.
