Fourth Quarter Surge Lifts Mariners Over Eagles

BANGOR, Maine – Maine Maritime women's lacrosse beat Husson University, 15-10 on Thursday evening in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup.

How it Happened: After three scoreless minutes, Lily Cook (Southwest Harbor, Maine) found Beth Labbe (Brunswick, Maine) for a man-down goal to put the Mariners on the board. The Eagles answered with two quick goals to take the lead before Darby Cendoma (Livonia, N.Y.) scored two consecutive goals to regain the lead. Husson ended the first quarter scoring two more goals to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Eagles. Maddy Benoit scored off a free position shot for the Eagles to start the second half. Labbe answered with an unassisted goal of her own before Husson scored another goal off a free position shot to take a 6-4 lead going into halftime.

Hazel Stoddard (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) got the Mariners going in the second half with two straight goals and Olivia Harriman (Orrington, Maine) added another one to take a 7-6 lead. Husson answered with two back-to-back goals to regain the lead. Stoddard then scored an unassisted goal to tie the game up before Hussno scored again to take the lead going into the fourth. Harriman started off the fourth with a goal to tie the game up once again but the Eagles answered with a goal directly after to take a 10-9 lead. Labbe then scored a man-up goal to spark a 6-0 run for the Mariners with goals from Labbe, Stoddard, and Aubrey Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) to take the lead and claim a 15-10 victory.

Inside the Numbers: Labbe and Stoddard led the Mariners with five goals each. Labbe also added three ground balls, a draw control, and a caused turnover, while Stoddard chipped in a game-high nine draw controls, four ground balls, and one caused turnover. Cendoma tallied two goals, while recording game-highs of nine ground balls and six caused turnovers.

Emma Romatzick and Sophia Gomez led the Eagles with three goals each. Maddy Benoit tallied seven draw controls and Sydney Heth picked up ffive ground balls.

Charlotte Rose (Newark, Del.) saved seven shots in 60 minutes for the Mariners, while Emily Godfrey tallied eight for the Ealges.

The Mariners held a 33-22 advantage in shots and a 35-24 advantage in ground balls over the Eagles.

Up Next: Maine Maritime improves to 6-6 overall and 4-1 in conference, while Husson falls to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in conference. The Mariners return to action on Saturday, April 23 at 2:00pm when they SUNY Poly in a conference matchup.
