Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's lacrosse beat UMaine-Farmington, 19-11 on Saturday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup.
How it Happened: The Mariners got off to a quick start when Olivia Harriman (Orrington, Maine) found Beth Labbe (Brunswick, Maine) and Amber Card (Bowdoin, Maine) for back-to-back goals. The Beavers answered with a goal before Hazel Stoddard (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) found the back of the net on a free position shot to make the score 3-1 at the end of the first quarter. Lily Cook (Southwest Harbor, Maine) scored a man-down goal to start the second quarter and the Beavers scored two quick goals to cut the Mariners' lead to one with 10:08 remaining in the first half. Stoddard then scored her second goal of the afternoon before the Beavers scored two more goals, tying the game at 5-5. The two teams went back-and-forth with goals coming from Cook, Aubrey Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.), Harriman, and Cook again, with the Mariners taking a close 9-7 lead going into halftime.
Stoddard set the tone for the second half, scoring two consecutive goals to put the Mariners up by four and to pass the Maine Maritime single-season record for goals. She finished the game with 43 goals on the seaon, topping fellow Thornton Academy graduate Tori Cooper's mark of 38 set back in 2017. The Beavers snuck a goal by the Mariners before Maine Maritime went on a commanding 4-0 run with goals from Mitchell, two from Darby Cendoma (Livonia, N.Y.), and one from Stoddard to make the score 15-8 at the end of the third period. Farmington started the fourth quarter with two quick goals but the Mariners answered with another four goals to make the score 19-10. The Beavers scored one more goal to end the game with a score of 19-11 in favor of Maine Maritime.
Inside the Numbers: Stoddard led the Mariners with eight goals, a game-high nine ground balls, seven draw controls, and tied the game-high four caused turnovers. Cook added three goals, two assisted, one ground ball, and one caused turnover. Olivia Alejandro (Houston, Texas) picked up six ground balls and tied the game-high four caused turnovers.
Kaya Backman led the Beavers with three goals, two caused turnovers, and one ground ball. Kristina Moody and Abby Trefsger added two goals each.
Charlotte Rose (Newark, Del.) tallied 15 saves in net for the Mariners, while Maddy TenKate recorded 8 for the Beavers.
The Beavers held a 34-33 advantage in shots and the Mariners held a 42-15 advantage in ground balls.
