Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's lacrosse beat SUNY Poly, 16-5 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon.
How it Happened: Hazel Stoddard (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) started off the afternoon with an unassisted goal to put the Mariners on the board. Amber Card (Bowdoin, Maine) followed up with a goal off a pass from Olivia Harriman (Orrington, Maine) and Beth Labbe (Brunswick, Maine) added an unassisted goal to put the Mariners up three. Stoddard then scored back-to-back goals to end the first quarter with a score of 5-0. Kirra Magaña (Miami, Fla.) started the second quarter with an unassisted goal, before the Wildcats scored off a free position shot for their first goal of the afternoon. Harriman quickly responded with an unassisted goal, while Labbe and Stoddard both scored off free position shots to make the score 9-1. Lily Cook (Southwest Harbor, Maine) scored off a pass from Stoddard to extend the Mariners lead, before SUNY Poly scored off another free position shot. Stoddard ended the first half with a goal off a free position shot to make the score 11-2 in favor of the Mariners.
The Wildcats struck first in the second half, scoring off a free position shot before the Mariners scored three in a row from Stoddard, Labbe, and Cook. Stoddard started off the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal, breaking the Maine Maritime women's lacrosse record for career goals, as a freshmen, with 66. Stoddard then assisted Cook for a goal before the Wildcats scored two more to end the game.
Inside the Numbers: Maine Maritime was led by Stoddard who tallied seven goals and two assists, along with a game-high seven ground balls to set a Maine Maritime single-season record for ground balls in a season with 52 total, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Cook added three goals, one ground ball and one draw control, while Labbe chipped in three goals, five draw controls, three ground balls, and a gamee-high four caused turnovers.
Molly Burdick led the Wildcats with three goals, nine draw controls, one ground ball, and one caused turnover, while Rachel Salmon added two goals, four ground balls and two draw controls.
Charlotte Rose (Newark, Del.) tallied 15 saves, breaking the Maine Maritime single-season record for saves in a season, while Alycia Lugo recorded 18 for the Wildcats.
The Mariners held a 43-25 advantage in shots and a 25-9 advantage in ground balls over the Wildcats.
Up Next: Maine Maritime improve to 7-6 overall and 5-1 in conference, while SUNY Poly falls to 1-10 overall and 1-5 in conference. The Mariners return to action tomorrow, April 24 at 12:00pm against Cazenovia College in a NAC matchup.
