Craig Dagan Reaches 400 Wins as Women's Basketball Takes NAC Home Opener

The Mariners soundly defeated UMaine-Farmington, 67-45, behind Evelyn Dagan's 14 points

CASTINE--The Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball team on Saturday thumped visiting UMaine-Farmington, 67-45, at Smith Gymnasium, signaling the 400th career win for 24-year head coach Craig Dagan with the Mariners program. Maine Maritime improves to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in the North Atlantic Conference East Division, while the Beavers fall to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in the NAC-East.

"This is a reflection of all the great coaches and players that I have worked with through the years. I am very proud of what we have accomplished over the past two decades," Dagan said on his milestone moment. "It's even sweeter to do it with this group of kids. They are a special group and deserve so much credit as to where the program is today!"

  • Junior Evelyn Dagan scored 14 points on the strength of four 3-pointers to lead all scorers.
  • Sophomore Hailey Blanchard shined in her first career home start with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

  • Jessica Dow (4 rebounds) chipped in 12 points and Sarah Poli (8 points) led the team with six rebounds and a game-high four assists.
How it Happened
  • Maine Maritime, which never trailed this afternoon, held UMF to 25.5 percent field goal shooting (14-55) and outrebounded the Beavers, 59-31.
  • The Mariners, who led 16-10 after 10 minutes, also had the advantage on second-chance points (15-5) and fast-break points (15-2).
  • Maine Maritime blew the game open in the third quarter when it outscored UMF 21-10 to take a 50-31 cushion.
  • Blanchard made the second of back-to-back triples with 8 minutes and 6 seconds left in the third quarter to make the score 35-23, as MMA maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the contest.

  • Dagan becomes the 111th women's basketball coach in NCAA Division III history to earn 400 victories. Among ACTIVE coaches, he ranks 48th in Division III wins, 14th in New England and third in Maine.
