Mariners Fall in Season Opener

Box Score STANDISH, Maine – Celia Melanson scored three goals and assisted on four more to lead Saint Joseph's College to a 19-8 win over Maine Maritime in women's lacrosse Sunday afternoon.

Melanson factored in on four of the Monks (1-0) nine first quarter goals. She broke the ice 2:16 into regulation before the Mariners (0-1) Aubrey Mitchell netted a free position goal to draw the teams even. Saint Joe's ripped off the next four goals to open the game up with Melanson scoring one and assisting on two more to make it 5-1. Mitchell struck again and then assisted Bella Scolaro to make it 5-3 with just under four minutes to play in the opening quarter. The Monks responded with four -straight goals, including a dagger with six-seconds left in the opening quarter to make it a 9-3 game. The Mariners never threatened again.

The Monks got four goals from Megan Mourmouras and Carson Battaglia. Saint Joe's fired off 35 shots against the Mariners 12. Mitchell recorded three goals and two assists for Maine Maritime. Rebecca Caron scored two and assisted another while Scolaro and Hazel Stoddard netter two goals apiece.

Saint Joe's outworked Maine Maritime for ground balls, picking up 22 to the Mariners 14.

Both teams platooned goalkeepers. Alexis Eldridge recorded one save and allowed three goals in a quarter's worth of work to collect the win. Kelsey Melton stopped six of the 21 shots faced in the first half, while Ella Bowes turned away seven of 11 shots faced in the second.

Maine Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, March 6 at Mt. St. Mary College (N.Y.).
