Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.--The Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball team saw its season's best four-game winning streak come to an end on Friday at the hands of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 59-53, to wrap up the Judy Pearson '85 Memorial Tournament at Staake Gymnasium.
Maine Maritime slips to 7-3 overall while WPI improves to 7-5.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Senior Erianna Moore scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed six rebounds to go along with two steals.
- Classmate Sydney Briscoe added a double-double that included 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
WPI Highlights
- Ava Giansiracusa came off the bench to net team highs of 21 points and eight rebounds.
- Alice Kelly contributed 11 points and three blocked shots to lead all defenders.
How it Happened
- Maine Maritime had a strong start with an 11-2 lead with 7 minutes and 1 second left in the first quarter.
- The Mariners hung on to a 15-11 lead after the first quarter.
- But the Engineers made their move by outscoring MMA in the second, 23-13, to take a 34-28 halftime lead.
- The Mariners opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run to take the lead back, 35-34, at the 7:20 mark.
- A Briscoe layup a few minutes later gave MMA its last lead at 37-36.
- WPI answered with a 16-6 run to go back in front for good, 52-43, heading into the fourth quarter.
- The Mariners twice managed to cut the nine-point deficit to two, but couldn't complete the comeback.
- WPI made 16 of 17 free throw attempts for 94.1 percent, while MMA converted 15 of 21 for a 71.4 clip.
- The contest featured four ties and nine lead changes.
- The Engineers had more scoring production from their bench, 34-4, and converted 16 MMA turnovers into 16 points.
Beyond the Boxscore
- The four-game, two-day event was hosted by Babson College.
- The teams were meeting for the first time since Jan. 4, 2003; the Engineers lead 2-0 all-time.
