Box Score CASTLETON, Vt.— In the regular season finale for both teams, visiting Maine Maritime Academy spoiled Senior Day for Vermont State University-Castleton on Sunday with an 18-9 victory in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Dave Wolk Stadium.
Maine Maritime has won 12 games in a row to improve to 12-1 on the season – both extending program benchmarks. VTSU-Castleton ends its season at 5-13 overall.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Sisters Hazel (11 points), a senior, and Hadley (6 points) Stoddard, a freshman, scored eight and three goals, respectively.
- Sophomore Lillian Diversi registered a hat trick among four points.
- Junior Rebecca Caron and freshman Caitlyn Lamb added two goals apiece.
- Hazel Stoddard and sophomore Abby Wong led in ground balls with five and four, respectively; they led the team with six draw controls each.
- Wong also tied junior teammate Jasmine Anderson with two caused turnovers.
VTSU-Castleton Highlights
- Brianna Paul led the Spartans with four goals and five points.
- Phoebe Loomis contributed two goals and four points. She posted a game-high eight draw controls.
- Hana Doria chipped in two caused turnovers.
How it Happened
- Hadley Stoddard scored the first goal just 12 seconds into the game after collecting the opening draw control to put MMA in front, setting the tone for the Mariners.
- Castleton tied it 1-1 with 8 minutes and 20 seconds remaining when Gianna Geraci found Loomis for the goal.
- The Mariners responded with three goals – Hazel Stoddard, Diversi and Lamb on the man-up – in a 2:50 span to go up 4-1 at the 4:46 mark of the first quarter.
- After Taylor Tallmadge and Paul scored back-to-back to pull Castleton within 4-3, MMA erupted by scoring the next seven goals – including three off the stick of Hazel Stoddard – into the second quarter to take a commanding 11-3 halftime lead.
- To start the second half, Castleton snapped MMA's 7-0 run on a free-position goal by Paul with 13:29 left in the third quarter.
- Hazel Stoddard scored back-to-back goals that gave the Mariners a 14-4 advantage at 10:53 to start running clock for the first time on the day.
- Castleton scored three straight goals to make it 15-7 at the 14:16 mark in the fourth quarter before MMA replied with three of its own to increase the lead to 18-7.
- The Mariners benefited by attacking the cage, evidenced by converting seven free-position goals in 14 attempts (Spartans were 2-for-9).
- Maine Maritime also enjoyed statistical dominance in shots (41-19), shots on goal (21-9), ground balls (24-15), draw controls (19-12), turnovers (11-17) and caused turnovers (5-3).
Inside the Boxscore
- This game was originally slated to be the season opener on both schools' schedules in February.
- Maine Maritime picks up its first win against Castleton in five all-time meetings; the Spartans won 20-1 the last time they met in 2018.
- The Spartans were fellow members of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) from 2001-18 (winning eight titles including seven-straight), competing now in the Little East Conference.
- Hazel Stoddard, who notched season highs of eight goals and 11 points today, leads MMA in goals (53), assists (34), total points (87), ground balls (40) and draw controls (57) on the season.
- Diversi has a career-high 15 assists this spring.

- Next Saturday back home in Castine, Maine Maritime will host Husson University in the North Atlantic Conference championship in a No. 1-2 seed matchup. Game time at Ritchie Field will be announced on Monday.
