Maine Maritime announces Wiggins as football defensive coordinator

CASTINE, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy football program announced Monday the addition of Nathan Wiggins as its new defensive coordinator.

Wiggins brings more than a decade of coaching experience at NCAA Division I and II programs, junior colleges, international teams and the high school level.

"We're excited to welcome Nate Wiggins to Maine Maritime as our defensive coordinator," said head football coach Nick Sheehan. "Nate brings tremendous energy, a passion for developing student-athletes, and a proven defensive mind that will help elevate our program as we continue building our foundation."

Most recently, Wiggins served as a quality control coach for defensive backs at the University of Louisiana–Lafayette. From 2023–2024, he was the defensive coordinator, head strength and conditioning coach, and linebackers coach at Coahoma Community College.

"I'm humbled, honored, and extremely grateful for the opportunity to impact the lives and community of MMA," Wiggins said. "Excited would be an understatement."

Wiggins' coaching resume also includes defensive coordinator roles at Vermilion Catholic High School and Patterson High School, as well as a stint at Pearl River Community College (2016–2019) as special teams coordinator, linebackers coach and head/assistant strength and conditioning coach. He previously coached running backs at Adams State University and worked overseas with the Troisdorf Jets U16 team in Germany as a linebackers and quarterbacks coach.

A graduate of Adams State, Wiggins earned his Bachelor of Arts in human performance and physical education in 2014. He played outside and inside linebacker for the Grizzlies from 2009–2013 before competing for the Troisdorf Jets in the German Football League in 2014.
