NORTHFIELD, Vt. — The Maine Maritime Academy men's wrestling team returned to the mat on Saturday battling Norwich University to a 44-11 loss behind three wins from sophomore
Gavin Ripley and two victories by sophomore
Kyle Stickel.
After dropping the opening match at 125 by forfeit, sophomore Trevor Llewelyn lost by tech fall at 133.
The Cadets picked up another six points with a forfeit win at 141, but Ripley pinned Billy Burke in the second period to put the Mariners on the board.
Sophomore
Wyndham Freeman competed for MMA at 157 falling by tech fall. Norwich earned two more wins by forfeit at 165 and 174, but Stickel earned an impressive 20-4 tech-fall victory over Joseph Menkello at 184 to give the Mariners 11 points for the dual.
Sophomore
Gregory Brunk lost by major decision at 197 and freshman
Takuma Steinberger fell by tech fall at 285 to conclude the dual scoring.
Llewelyn competed in two more bouts at 133 falling in both, while Ripley picked up his second win at 149 by tech fall and Stickel tallied his second tech-fall decision in an exhibition match at 184.
Additionally, sophomore
Andrew Morrow competed at 184 falling by pin and again at 285 falling by pin, while Steinberger lost by major decision in his second match and Brunk also competed at 285 falling by pin.
Ripley posted his third win of the day, his third tech-fall victory winning 18-3 to conclude the match.
The Mariners now turn their attention to the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship on Feb. 28 in Indianapolis, Ind.
