Hometown: Eliot, Maine

Major: Marine Systems Engineering 5-year

Anticipated Graduation Year: 2023

Why did you choose to attend Maine Maritime? My mom was interested in the school and I had a family member attend here so I figured I should give it a shot. I knew I wanted a meaningful degree with a successful job after college, and this institution showed a lot of promise for both of those things.

Why did you choose Marine Systems Engineering for a major? I liked the job freedom that this major offered, getting the unlimited coast guard license for marine engineering, as well as the advanced math and science topics for a job centered around design.

What first got you interested in cross country? Coach King approached me during New Student Orientation and asked if I wanted to join the team. I had never done a sport before, so I was interested in trying something new.

Tell us about something outside of Mariners Athletics that you are really interested in? I am an avid blood donator. So far, I have donated 2 gallons. I have participated in many blood drives here on campus and have helped host one.

Who on campus has made the biggest impact on you? Professor Nicholas Starbird has made a pretty big impact on me. I have always enjoyed the classes he has taught and he has always given me great insight in planning my future. I look forward to getting a chance to work with him in the industry in the future.

How do you balance athletics, academics, and regimental obligations? I try to prioritize what is most pertinent for the day and try to avoid procrastinating lengthy projects. Freshman year was the most exhausting, trying to figure out how to balance everything, but it has become much easier over the years. School always comes first for me, and sleep is a close second!

What is it like being a female on campus? To be honest, it isn’t something you think about often. I have a strong and independent personality and do well for myself, so gender hasn’t felt like a huge hurdle for me. I am typically the only girl in most of my classes, but that doesn’t bother me.

Tell us about a summer experience related to Maine Maritime. Freshman cruise during the 2019 summer was a blast. Going to Europe had always been a dream of mine. I think Barcelona, Spain and Tallinn, Estonia were my favorite stops.

What has been your favorite moment so far while competing at MMA? Competing at the Suffolk Invitational Women’s 6K at Franklin Park in Boston—it was my birthday and I was the first Mariner on the women’s team across the finish line.

What is your favorite part about being on the Women’s Cross-Country team? I love travelling with them to overnight meets, especially when we go to Boston. We get to walk around the city and the long bus rides are fun.

What motivates you to succeed? I find motivation in my future dreams. I have always known that I wanted to be successful and I must work hard for it. I would say my mom motivates me to do well too, and the student loans I have to pay back are pretty motivating to stay in school.

What advice would you give incoming freshmen? I would have to say that getting into a healthy sleep schedule is important. Get your studying and homework done early. I can’t remember the last time I stayed up late for an exam. For me, it’s just not worth it. I’d rather study early and get good sleep.

What is your favorite way to relieve stress? I watch my favorite channels on YouTube to decompress, I would mostly deem them as “junk” entertainment. It’s nice to just sit down and not have to think or learn. Just laugh.
