2006 Scholar-athlete award winners

Maine Maritime Academy honors student-athletes
The Maine Maritime Academy athletic department recognized and celebrated the achievements of Mariner student-athletes at their "Athletic Awards Night" on campus in Castine. Sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Athletic Director Jim Dyer and Senior Women's Administrator Katrina Dagan presided over the evening's festivities. In total, there were 45 scholar-athlete award winners recognized at the event. To be recognized as a Mariner scholar-athlete a student needs to be on the Dean's list academically, and have participated in a varsity sport.

Pictured right is MMA Female Student-athlete of the Year Alyssa Burns (Basketball), Director of Athletics Jim Dyer, and MMA Male Student-athlete of the Year Don Thibodeau (Football).

MMA Female Athlete of the Year - Alyssa Burns. Alyssa helped lead the Lady Mariner Women's Basketball team to a 23-6 record, the NAC regular season title, and the school's second consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament. The junior G/F from Dixfield, Maine led the team in scoring with 17.9 points per game. She set a school record with 500 points in one season. Burns was named to the NAC All-Tournament Team, was honored as the NAC Player of the Year for the second year in a row, and was a First Team All-NAC Selection, also for the second year in a row. She was also the first player in MMA history to be chosen as a member of the ECAC All-Region Team.

MMA Male Athlete of the Year - Don Thibodeau. For his achievements during the fall, the senior running back from Lawrence, Maine was named as the Mariner Football team MVP, the New England Football Conference First Team Offensive Player of the Year, a New England Writers Association NCAA Division II/III First Team selection, the Gridiron Club of Boston Joseph Zabilskie Award, as the ECAC Division III Northeast Player of the Year, to the D3Football.com All-American team, and finished the season as the #2 rusher in the nation.

In addition, eight MMA student-athletes were recognized as North Atlantic Conference All-Academic Selections: Julia Knights, Women's basketball; Crystal Parker, Women's basketball; Amanda Johnson, Women's Soccer and Women's basketball; Meghan Marshall, Women's Soccer and Women's basketball; Katie Clapham, Volleyball; Ashley Douglass, Women's soccer; Kristin Gabor, Women's soccer; and Andy Pease, Men's soccer.

Two athletic teams were recognized for having been recipients of the North Atlantic Conference Sportsmanship Awards: Men's Soccer and Softball.
