MMA opens season with win on the road

Machias, ME – Maine Maritime got scoring from ten different players en route to a 70-56 victory over the University of Maine at Machias on Tuesday to open their 2009-2010 season.

The Lady Mariners improve to 1-0 on the season while the Clippers fall to 3-2 on the year. MMA held a eight point half time lead and pushed the lead to 20-points mid way through the second stanza before winning by the final margin of 14.

Maggie Smith (Bath, ME) led all Lady Mariners, notching a team-high 18 points while collecting 4 rebounds. Sam Goda (Eliot, ME) picked up where she left off her freshman year, posting a double-double, with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Katie Pushard (Winthrop, ME) and Casey McCloskey (Howland, ME) each had six helpers in the win while Brittany Hunt (Hickory, NC) collected 14 points and three steals.

Jamyriah McPherson led all scorers with 19 points while Kayla Wood added 11 points and 8 rebounds in the loss. The Clippers were hampered by 34 turnovers which resulted in 26 MMA points. Sabree Rodriguez added 11 points and 9 rebounds for Machias.

Maine Maritime will return to action when they host the Mariner Invitational on Friday night. The 6pm game will feature Rivier and Plymouth State, while the 8pm match-up will have MMA going up against Newbury College.
